Blowing Off Steam About Brother

We have a Brother 4 in 1. It worked wonderfully until we each upgraded to Win 10 and then it didn't work at all. Brother said that they were working on a patch. I did some research awhile later and found the patch. It worked. Then suddenly, this week, the machine quit working. I did a search on the Brother site, followed their instructions and it still did not work. So, I contacted Brother through their chat line, explained what happened. The Brother person said that she would "talk" me through it to have the problem resolved. It was exactly the same thing that I had already done. Near the end, she left me with the instruction to continue and follow the prompts. It still did not work and the Brother person was long gone, not waiting to see if the problem was resolved. I sent a note to Brother and have not heard back (it's now been 3 days).

Is this typical of these big companies, to be difficult to find help, to contact, to leave one hanging, to not respond?

There, I feel a bit better, but my 4 in 1 is still not working and my wife and I each rely on a printer and scanner for each of our small home businesses.

And, no, we do not want to go back to Win 7 or 8.1. It seems now that the only solution is to buy a new Win 10 compatible machine that will not be Brother.

Dale, having been a sys admin for some years, I can empathize with your problem.

This is also why companies for whom I've worked delay upgrading operating systems until they check every potential problem, all of the peripheral devices, and networking issues that can, even remotely, happen.

I don't know one company that has upgraded to 10 yet. This statement is based on conversations with friends who are still working in the sys admin arena.

I had a HP personal laserjet and loved it, worked great. When I updated to Windows 7 I had a boat anchor for a printer. I had to purchase a new laser printer. Turned out HP early on had gone off the reservation from a universal control language with HPCL and customized their control language to the extent they could no longer support newer OS's and it was too difficult (or costly) to continue support. I remember looking at pages and pages of HP equipment that was no longer workable under Windows 7 and were deemed obsolete. All based on a bad decision early on. I had Plustek scanners which operated fine but went the same way when Windows went to XP. I have been in technology my whole life from Mainframe to Servers, Tech Support everywhere leaves a lot to be desired IMHO. As for Windows 10, not yet for me, not for a long time I hope. I am still on Windows 7 and will remain there as long as I can.

Printers and Win10 seem to be in conflict. I haven't tried to print with the older Dell I was able to update to Win10. Depending on how good that 4-in-1 is (or your current computer), I would hold off a bit before buying a new computer. Maybe you can buy a cheap Win10 compatible printer while Brother works out the kinks. You have to wonder what MS did to cause these printer problems.

As a retired IT person I can tell you from experience that Brother has a tendency to wait till the absolutely have to upgrade their drivers. Most other printer companies will have their new drivers available at the introduction of a new OS but not Brother.

This may not be your problem, but I had an HP all in one printer. The printer is USB connected to my computer and the printer is also on my network.

When I upgraded to Win 10, the USB-printer connection did not get discovered. Hence all the auxiliary functions such as scanning, faxing etc did not work.

Eventually, I decided to do a detailed examination of the problem. At that time is when I noticed the printer was not on the USB interface of the computer.

I recycled the printer power while the computer was connected and the computer detected the USB printer interface. This fixed everything for the all in one printer.

I have an ASUS laptop that I upgraded from W8.2 to W10 and wirelessly print to our Canon 3 way printer. Every now and then I get a popup saying the printer is being used by another computer when mine is the only one turned on. I have to go turn off the printer and turn it back on to make it function properly. A nuisance, but not painful.

Been using Brother printers for 30+ years. Extremely reliable. No problems, and good tech support when I needed it. Hp, Canon, Epson, etc, can be far worse relatively speaking when it comes to corporate run around and junk products. Win 10 is also part of the problem, and Microsoft especially is nortorious for screwing up perfectly good OS drivers with bogus new OS versions like Vista, 8, and 10, that break people,s computers. But, Sounds like Brother is not ready with a revised win 10 print driver, for your 4/1 and your tech rep was in denial or knowledge limited. The competition are in simular water. Shop models, then read reviews on 10 compatibility. Brother is not perfect, but their track record compared to most consumer grade printers is way above most manufactures.

I didn't mean to put down Brother equipment, for the most part they make good reliable equipment except for their driver support being late. I personally have 2 machines running Win10 on a home network with a Canon 100 pro, HP color laser and an Epson V600 scanner and I have had no problems at all on either computer or on the network. I actually like Win10. The only problem I've had so far has been with some bad hardware, I had some bad RAM.
