I'm sure you already know the coloring of birds is based on survival of the species strategies.

Generally, males need to attract females when mating season arrives, so are very loud and brightly colored. If you paint black the red/yellow wing flashes on a male red-winged blackbird, the females will simply ignore them, no matter how good their song.

Females need to be more stealthy for hiding more effectively from predators while nesting so have more muted colors.
