I like the dark Dave.

Thank you for sharing what you started with. I hate your images, they make me feel like I am in the first grade.

Your work is so inspiring, but how you got from A to B I will never know. Inspiring, but I feel completely inadequate. Sigh...

Thanks Dave, but I honestly not only don't think I can do it, I really don't want to spend the time on it. What you've done takes skill I don't even want to acquire. I consider myself a documentary photographer. As discussed elsewhere I have no qualms about moving an errant seagull where he should'a been, but what you've done is really graphic art. If I really wanted to do it I probably could learn it, but jeepers I don't even know where I'd start, especially with something like the headlight in the fog. That's really masterful and I don't know how you did it. But I know there are plenty of folks here who will take up the challenge!
Thanks Dave, but I honestly not only don't think I... (show quote)

Thank you Chuck !!! I understand and yes, it is time consuming. If you do decide you would like to attempt something like this let me know and I'll try and walk you through it. If I can remember !!!

Thank you Piet !!! I really appreciate your compliment. Just so you know it has been and sometimes still is a struggle. I use to feel as you do but I was determined to find a way graduate to the 2nd grade.

You did not throw me a complete curve as I originally took this into Lr for a good look before comment. I saw banding and some other things that lead me to believe you had worked this over pretty good, which I have absolutely nothing against. Even so, I must say I was quite surprised by the original. I was not ready for such an intense challenge, but now don’t know how to thank you enough. I thought this was truly above my pay grade and was going to just throw in the towel. Then not wanting to eat my words in front of all the wonderful UHH participants in FYC I began to fiddle. Here is what I came up with. May not be your initial intent, but it is my visual interpretation of my earlier verbal reply to you. It has some flaws. But after all I learned from tackling this task I feel with more time I could probably iron out the imperfections. Thank you again very much for inspiring me to challenge myself. One last thing……I feel this has a better feel flipped, but Not good at flipping the words yet.

Frank, I'm glad you decided to take the challenge and produce your own version. Overall, you did quite well. Although, the proportion of the lamp post appears small.

To me the lighting/exposure is acceptable but I'm sure others will say "to dark". Not for me though !!! I live on the dark side and probably should lighten up, LOL. Overall, Frank, I like it. Well done.

I have attached the original file. I'm excited to see other versions and hopefully we all can learn something new. Have fun.

I have not yet played except to make a combo of both midnight photos to better compare your changes from A-->B ... Must download to see as full screen really show the changes.

I will play with the original later... this is going to be shown at the Camera Club as an educational tool to show how a simple street shot can be turned into creativity.

I would be real interested to see your version dpullum. Glad to hear this will be is to used as an educational tool. As an addition I think it would be a good idea to show the original as well. Just to show a starting point. Thank you !!!

"I would be real interested to see your version dpullum.Dave" and yes Dave the Original and Your finished would be the combo... would print and make a comment regarding your creativity with shading. Of course your name and UHH reference. People in the club tend to make "Nice Photos" that are right out of the camera... that limits the visual world. Oh, the art tools we have... Wow!

Everyone should visit Daves Gallery, fantastic B&W work:
http://www.davechinn.com/

Personally, having grown up in B&W horror film era... Frankenstein, Wolfman, London Fog detectives, and such... I prefer the dark foreboding like your Midnight.

OK, since you went wonderfully with the dark foreboding I decided that going with color and surreal would be my route.

I first used prospective to align the car and building.. trivial. Then cropped and did a little cloning.. again trivial.

Went next to Topaz Adjust and used "dynamic" to change and accent/distort the color. Next used Mediachance Dynamic Autopainter using "New Vencent Van Gogh" brushes setting and pressed start. One cup of coffee later I have the bright side of the street scene your knowing finger/eye took.

Thank you for the challenge and starting point:

Its good to see a different perspective. Although, it never occurred to me to go that route. May be something for me to consider in the future. Thank you for the insight of possible things to come.
