wild turkeys are no slouch when it comes to flying.
Well seen and shot,Millismote. I know they also can run very fast.
First time I saw a flock go straight up like a helicopter, clear some trees that were about 25 foot high and then off in a flight over them I couldn't believe it. Hard to believe a bird that size can fly that well.

they roost high up in trees at night to sleep.

Good catch.
My sister, who lives in Michigan, had a flock that used to winter in a coral that was only used in the summer. Over time the flock grew and took over her back yard, to the point she couldn't open her back door. Her husband worked for Fish and Wildlife, and eventually they got rid of them.

The real-deal airplane Turkey Drop happens in the early-Fall at a small town near me, Yellville, AR, as part of the annual National Wild Turkey Calling Championship & festival. That's why that WKRP did that episode, I believe.
The highlight of the festival is when real live turkeys are dropped from a low-flying airplane. PETA & FAA are of course outraged & rewards are offered in the newspaper for the name of the pilot-culprit(s), but it happens year-after-year. Not cruel, the turkeys fly / glide to the ground & are chased-down by kids to save for a pet or a free main course of the Thanksgiving dinner.
My 2nd favorite: the "Miss Drumsticks" contest, where local young ladies strut their stuff with all their torso, upper body & face hidden from view, and the judging is for the lady having just the best / most shapely "drumsticks."
Of course the turkey-calling contest is good, too.
A truly great-fun weekend.
