Remove the battery and recharge it, even if it seems to be charged. When the battery is out, turn the camera on and off. That's the advice I got for my dead cell phone, and it worked. Turning it on w/o the battery will use up any charge left in the camera. After the battery is fully charged, try it again. I'd also remove and reinsert the SD card and lens. I don't why, but it gives you something to do. Electronics can be strange.
Let us know how this turns out.

If you bought it new in June of 2011 it is still under warranty. If the things that Jerry told you to do don't work, get in touch with Canon.
I also have a t3i and that happened to me one time. I read the troubleshooting section in my manual- my card slot door was not completely closed.

Did you try recharging the battery?
If charging the battery does not work.Try cleaning the battery and camera contacts. a cuetip should work. Just make sure tnot to leave anything in the camera.
Do you have a memory card in the slot? It won't start up without one.
Like jerryc41 remove the battery and recharge. I have the T3I among one of my cameras and found that if the memory card is improperly formatted the camera does lock up.

Jerry's advice is spot on.
If all else fails MWAC has the best advice.
So i tried exactly what jerry said and it did not work. i then cleaned the contacts and it still would not turn on. i have a card in and the door is all the way closed
so i think im going to use my warranty now or get it checked out by canon
Did you figure out what was wrong. My camera just died as well. I started to take a video and then it just shut off.

That sounds like a defective battery.
You do have a spare battery, don't you?
I have 2 spares. I tried them all. I also tried all the doors and cleaning the terminals. I took the lense off and then reinstalled. Nothing. I called Canon and they said that I did everything they would advise over the phone to do and I need to send it in. I have a 3 year extended warranty through Mack Camera so I just registered the repair with them. I need to mail it to them. I will call tomorrow to see if I can deliver it myself instead of shipping it.
