Photographically a wide angle lens very close to the police would make them the subject of the photo while showing their environment. Real world that would not work. Minimally, that would kill the spontaneity of the moment.
It does work in the real world, Jim. That is how some of the best street photographers work. They all have a slightly different technique in getting close, but that's what they do.
