Nice one. Did he, or one of his friends, make that big hole? We have some pileated woodpeckers come to our front trees occasionally, and they make holes that could hide a grapefruit. Eventually, they all closed up.
I believe that is a Yellow-bellied. Your right, you can't get too close to them.
Jerry, I looked in my Audubon Field Guide to North American birds and 3 other bird books and the Red Bellied is shown as a female but, the male is along side of her so I'd go figure . They enjoy tearing down the dead limbs and today I saw 1 dig a cream colored mili or centipede out of the tree limb . We have 2 or 3 families living in our forest behind the house.
