Today, we had very bad weather with strong winds and super cold. Through the glass door in our kitchen I took these photos of woodpecker which was sitting on a tree in the backyard. Strong wind had made the feathers of the woodpecker puffed up.
Nice shots ... especially since you didn't have to go out in the cold.
I doubt that the wind puffed up the feathers. Puffing their feathers is a method most small birds use to stay warm. The puffed up feathers help keep the wind off their bodies, as well as trapping heat.

Bill, I was not sure to use puffed up for this situation. I was about to mention about this in my message but did not. However, Bill, could you please let me know what word or words I should have used instead?
I think puffed up was the right phrase. But I believe it was a natural reaction of the bird to the cold. Once puffed up the wind will have some effect.
