This has to be downloaded to be appreciated otherwise the gradations in the black around the sun are lost. Obviously this is taken through glass (unless you are sitting in the open cockpit on some heroic flight) and that has added a little flaring around the sun. It has also resulted in the small reflection close to the centre. Initially I wasn't sure about this but since I know it is from a plane and that you are looking through glass that small circular reflection adds a depth that would otherwise be missing. Rather than a series of flat stripes you end up with a plane of clouds extending towards you and seemingly beyond the sun, enveloped in an all consuming blackness. Its one of those simple but quite evocative images that I really enjoy. As an Australian I guess it also resonates because the black yellow and red area reminds me very much of the Australian aboriginal flag.

A nice image, I like it

We're going to have to teach you a better approach in describing your images...................This was a shot I took from the space shuttle....................or I was investigating paranormal activity in the Louisiana swamps when I came upon this manifestation..............or I was deep diving in the Mariana Trench when .............

Thanks, Peter. It was a departing flight from San Francisco. We left late afternoon and there was a fog bank moving in. As we took off, we almost immediately were in fog. As we broke out of it, there was the sun resting right on top of the fog layer. I pressed the camera against the window of our 737 and took the photo.

These windows are double panes of plastic. So, it's not the optimum media through which to shoot, but it was the only way to take the photo.

TW, I guess I could have gotten a bit more imaginative. Thanks for taking a look and commenting.

I like it! It's a tad abstract, it has depth and color. Very Nice smooth gradient of color. Was that shot on film?

It is beautiful and really nice in download. As I think that the bottom colors are much more interesting than the black above the sun, I might have cropped out some of the top of the photo putting the sun even more in the corner. That is a personal preference and really is not here or there. The image is lovely and one you can easily spend lots of time with.

Thanks, JD750. I felt that scene spoke volumes in simplicity and beauty. I appreciate your comment.

Yes, it was Kodachrome 64. The exif data has a lot more details.

Thanks, Erich. I appreciate you taking a look and the comments. Due to having to place the end of the lens against the airplane window, I didn't have a whole lot of leeway in composition. This image is cropped a bit already and trying to crop more didn't quite work as well.

Yes simplicity and beauty. I agree.

I knew it! To me, it had a "film look" which is hard for me to put into words but one thing I can identify is a silky smoothness to the texture and color gradient. Good old Kodachrome 64! (I can hear Paul Simon in my head now.)
I shot with it in my early years. Very fine grain, good color, from what I recall.

And you nailed the exposure. Good job!

I checked out the exif. That's an awesome lens.
