When I look at EXIF data one of the categories is "Bit Depth" like: Bit Depth=24.
What is Bit Depth? (I'm glad I never had that question on a test).

Bit depth is an indication of how many levels of shades are distinguishable for a basic color. Eight bit is standard (255 colors). Twenty-fout bit depth is indicative of a very large number of separate colors and suggests a high level of subtlety is color variation.
Thanks for those links, GF.
They were an education in something I wasn't aware of (not unusual for me).
I strongly recommend these links to anyone not familiar with bit depth. Read both of them.
Is 24 bit depth refering to 8 bits per colour channel?

That's the way I read it.

Yep. 24-bit is 8-bit depth each for the Red, Green and Blue channels. 2**8 (2 raised to the 8th power) = 256, i.e., 256 shades in each channel. 256x256x256 = 16,777,216, which is the number of shades of color you can generate with all the possible combinations of red, green and blue. If you edit in 16-bit color (achievable with some cameras), you widen the spectrum to 281 trillion colors. That's a bit more than my eyes can discriminate.
There's a nice explanation at:
