Nikon 2x Teleconverter

I want to go and shoot some Ospreys nesting on Jamestown. I tried it with my "otherbrand" 70-300mm. Just did not have quite enough reach..............I am looking at a 2x Nikon tele-extender used at B & H.

All kinds of disclaimers. For instance: "the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses"

FIT ??? I thought all F mount lenses fit ?? . However it does say it will work with a Nikkor AF 70-300 f/4-5.6D ED. So why wouldn't it work with my Nikkor 50-200mm and give me the 400mm that I want. I know that I will loose two stops. I can meter it and then change lenses & add two stops. It will be manual focus. Otherwise will I be ok ???

Using this with manual focus, will the little green dot on the left in my viewfinder come on when I am in focus ?? I know it will not autofocus, but will I get the green light ???

If Nikon indicates that it will not work on your lens then it won't, and you won't be ok.

Why, I don't have that kind of knowledge, but I do trust the scientist at Nikon to provide the product knowledge.

Just as an aside, which verison is B&H selling. I tested version II and wasn't happy with the results, however, III is far superior at least for my needs.

Although the Nikon lens mount has not changed in size and type, there are several versions: standard (no features), AI, AIS, autofocus, etc. If you put an AI or AIS teleconverter between an autofocus body and an autofocus lens, you now have a manual lens. I believe autofocus teleconverters are denoted by an "E" after the number (e.g., TC-14 E).

Also be aware that some Nikon TC's are long and are made specifically for lenses with recessed rear elements.

I understand your confusion- Yes, it is an F mount, but you will lose two stops, making your lens f11 at the far end. Aside from AF not working, you will have a very dim view. If Nikon wanted it to fit, it would fit. They do not want it to fit...so it doesn't.

Same desire - shoot some Osprey - wanted to use my D300 for its crop factor and my 80-400, which Nikon says will not work with a teleconverter. Discussed with dealer (Service Photo) and they suggested using a Kenko and it does work. Sometimes when the light is low, have to use manual focus.
Got my Osprey. See attached if I recall correctly distance is about 350 feet

I have a 300 f2.8 and the new 28-300. Before I could afford the Nikon TC2 for my 300 I got a Bower Mc7 2X N/AF. I works fine on both lenses. Focus is pretty good with it too. I even use it on the 80-400 some times. I do have the Nikon now, and you can tell the difference in sharpness, but not by a lot. I went to the camera story and they let me play with it. Took both lenses in with me to try them. I tried a Pro Master and a Vivitar, And they both would hunt for focus.

The TC 201 will not accept all Nikon fit lenses. A. The lens must have rather deep recessed back elements, or they will touch the protruding front elements of the converter. This of course prevents the lens from being attached to the converter. It's all in the design of the two items, they must be compatible.

I shoot Canon and it's the same with Canon lenses. I bought a 2X years ago figuring to use it on my 75-300 -- doesn't work. It does, however, work on my 70-200 2.8 IS and when I've rented a 100-400. It also does not fit my Sigma 150-500. There are lists on the manufacturer's website, I think a link was posted above.

But for that price, I would grab it for future use!
