IMO I like what you did with the cropping, you left room in front of the bird, and they are not cropped to close, I take it #3 was a uncropped version.

Yes. #3 was uncropped. The Camera is a Canon 40D and the lens is the 100-400.
I agree with Don, those are perfect crops. The photos are well composed with the diagonal line of the branch, and the branch and bird in the last shot, make for a visually interesting image. Very nice! 8-)
To my thinking they're very well cropped. My philosophy is to crop enough to show all the detail that my lens is capable of plus enough to show the bird in it's habitat. I dislike it when people photoshop out eveything but the bird and a bit of the branch it is sitting on. Makes it look like a museum specimen.
I agree that the cropping is good. Sometimes it's necessary in order to remove unwanted stuff and to show more detail on the bird. Besides the good cropping, the photos are very good.
