This must have been a tricky one to get the exposure right. For me it doesn't say homeless because what he's wearing looks too much like a dress cloak.

Its not ringing the bell Im afraid. The soft focus whilst intended looks like a focus error. Her face in focus at least would help this and as R.G. says she does not look homeless. People walking by or similar would convey this.

I have to agree, the soft focus and the dark door and cape/coat are strong. If the face was in focus, I believe it would strengthen the image. Nice attempt...........

If the face was in focus it would, I think, be an intriguing image. I like the high contrast and witch-like look.

Why? I think it hurts the shot which otherwise would have been very good.

Appears to me that the soft focus is mostly from camera shake at 1/5 second.

If you had emphasised the peeling paint and the grungy step with sharp detail enhancement the you might have been able to have given some visual support to the harshness of homelessness. As it is, by going soft you have undercut the potential that her surroundings present to add layers of meaning to your title. But putting that aside, what I find strange is her position, it is almost as if she is floating. I can't quite work out how her body fits into the doorway. Rather than homeless she seems somewhat ethereal. And I guess the fact that you wrote 'soft focus intended' is in itself a recognition that it hasn't quite worked. If the soft focus had worked there would be no need to explain it, it would have been self evident. But unlike many of us (myself included) who tend to get hung up on sharp, sharp, sharp, at least you are trying something different.

It is a rather intriguing shot, though I think it looks more like a nun than a homeless person. Certainly it is mysterious, a little other-worldly, and demands monochrome treatment.

What I wish for here was more sharpness in the face, and more detail in the blacks so I could figure out exactly how this person is wound up in the doorway. There are some more exotic PP treatments that could turn this into an artistic type image, and I would not hesitate to do that if your initial choice doesn't satisfy, because it is interesting enough that you'll want to keep it.

Thank you for sharing a unique image.

The soft focus was intended. Didn't work!!!
No camera shake on tripod with cable remote.
Homeless? This lady could have been newly homeless, so her cloak would have been clean, the homeless aren't always dirty!!
Now I have a problem photographing people in misery for my personal use. I have done it but it bothers me.
The lady is my special friend wearing my Trail Duster, so not homeless.

I love the image! I don't, however, read it as 'homeless,' I see a witch in the doorway of a seventeenth century dwelling, about to commit some heinous deed, a perfect image for Halloween. The softness works just fine in that context, and makes this very nicely done.

The Halloween connection never crossed my mind.

Regardless of the opinions of the inordinately sharp-obscessed, this is a strong and, to my eye, an engrossing image...stark black and white, just a glimpse of an aged visage....
she keeps knocking...and again..her oldest, dearest life-long friend should have answered that door by now... surely not....no.....

It really doesn't require much imagination to perceive scenarios...

The different things that different eyes can see....just amazing!

Good job!
