What a doll!

A relative in Japan sent this doll that she made to my wife. My relative must be in her 70s. I am planning to send her a picture of the doll. So, I was practicing my strobist portrait techniques on it last night using a Canon 5D with a 90mm tilt-shift lens. Three flashes: Canon 550EX in a Lastolight Ezybox (soft-box), Vivitar 283 with Rogue grid for the hair light, and a snooted Vivitar 283 with purple gel for the background light. Any comments would be much appreciated.

Very nice photo. Good use of lighting, and the purple spot works well.

She did a great job on making the doll and you did a great job on the photo. She will like the picture. Thanks for sharing.

It's a fabulous photo ... It's so good that you can see all the strings in her outfit. I hate to be the only one that sees the flaws ... there are distracting strings above her right arm and her left shoulder... I would clone them out before printing or sending. I took it into photoshop and cleaned them up .. if you would like to see.

Thank you all for your comments! I'm still learning off-camera flash techniques. I found David Hobby's strobist.blogspot.com site an outstanding site for this.

You have quite an eye! I didn't notice those before. I will clone those out. I did notice one other flaw that isn't so apparent. I used a shutter speed of 1/200 which is the fastest permissible sync for my Canon 550EX flash (without using high-speed sync). But, when using old Vivitar 283's as slaves, I needed to use 1/160. If you look carefully, you can see a narrow vertical, black strip on the right. It blends in with the black background, so I didn't fix it.

It does blend in well .. not something to worry about in my opinion... but when you do clone and zoom in you will also notice a lot of other clutter stuff around the base .. might be dust or something .... You did really well capturing it though :)
