Hi Dave, seems we have some similar issues. I was also looking at the D750 until the D500 came out, now I'm pondering again... I have a D300 and a D700 and was thinking about a new camera. I also had been saving up for a new lens for the D700. I ended up buying the 24-120 f4 for the D700 because I couldn't decide between a D7200 and the D750. So I decided to wait. The advantage of the D7200 was that I already have the 16-85 Nikon lens and I like that lens a lot! So not wanting to necessarily go back to a DX format body I got the lens for the D700 and decided to wait and see what cameras came out next (the time was about right for that). I, like a lot of people, had given up on the D400. I didn't think Nikon would come out with another camera like the D300(s) now that FX was getting cheaper and more popular. Then they through me a loop with the D500! Really attractive specs on a DX sensor, and I could use my 16-85 lens again... But I just bought the 24-120 lens! Darn it Nikon!
Oh well hear I am waiting again, and with a new FX lens. :)

Oh and by the way, I like your avatar photo! I was last at Yellowstone in the early spring in 1999 and I was shooting Kodachrome 64 with my F3. It was a colder day than when you were there so a distant shot of Grand Prismatic Springs would have looked like a cloud at ground level. :) Down side of Yellowstone in colder weather.

I also like your sense of humor, keep it up. :)

Comments from others are welcome as well. ;)

Sorry to insert myself in your conversation.. but...
came up?
the D500 is yet to be released.
The guys who got a "hands on" on a few sites said the sensor and body was still being worked on.

Nikon plans a release in March. They, as well as the Nikon dealers, are already taking pre-orders. $2,000.

I am torn between having a second FF camera or going with a D500. It sure sounds sweet at a "reasonable" price.

I'm in your position.
I have a D610 but the AF isnt very good at dawn or dusk with a dark lens like my 150-600 contemporary.
also the 4k video is what attracts me as well (and the huge buffer)

Yea, see what I mean, it's a real tempting camera, but I can get a D750 for the same price... It's quite a dilemma. :)

John,

Thank you for your post and I apologize for the delayed response!

Part of my issue is that I don't have a full frame and had pretty much decided on the D750 and the 24-70 to round out my lenses. I'm sure that it would be just fine, but while I enjoy shooting almost anything, wildlife is what we enjoy and now we're moving toward birding. it's difficult to ignore the D500 when it appears it would best suit my needs.

In August I picked up the 70-200 2.8 and 80-400vr and TC14iii for our Yellowstone trip.

By the way, I do not recommend climbing the hill behind the Grand Prismatic. My wife, who was behind me, took a picture of some fat ass maneuvering up the hill. Tough to get a safe vantage point and not really a good idea.

I like the D7100 and will keep it, but I'll probably sell my D7000 if I upgrade.

Good luck, I'll be curious to see what you do in March! Dave.

The good thing is that we have the option of waiting for the release and reviews of the newbe, but I feel that when there are issues, Nikon will will handle them appropriately.

The camera is complete and in production. I actually handled and shot it myself the day before its announcement and it is amazing. I posted pics here on UHH at the time.

Considering the extra "reach" the crop sensor would give you for birding the D500 seems like the best thing for you.

For me I do some wildlife but landscape and architectural are my favorite subjects. I also do a little portrait/model work but not that much. Like I posted elsewhere; I/you can do pano shots to get a wider and higher resolution images for landscapes it you want to, so a real high pixel count is not a necessity for me.
I do like the new features of that D500 though, so I may give it some consideration. Especially since I don't need the lens in the kit so I would just get the body (most likely). Although if the reviews of that new lens are much better than the old 16-85 that I have, I may want to upgrade... "If I were a rich man..." :) I don't look or sound like Chaim Topal

John,

Our juggling acts will most likely never end!

If I already had a full frame, no decision would be necessary!

If I had any nerve I'd get both, but after getting the 70-200 and 80-400 about two weeks apart, I'm trying to be a little more sensible. We'll see how that works out!

I kind of wish that Nikon had made the D500 with a CF slot and the new XQD card slot, but that's because I have a D300 and a D700 so I am fat with CF cards. :) Though I also have a P7700 so I have plenty of SD cards too. And since the P7700 seems to have no buffer at all ;) I have leaned toward fast SD cards. I never bothered with supper fast CF cards because both the D300 and D700 have write speeds of 30 (or was it 40) Mbs so they don't write all that fast.
