There are some pretty good deals on the Pentax K50 right now with varying lens options.
I currently have a Nikon D7000 with several lenses and a Panosonic Lumix, DMC ZS40. I bought the latter for the travel purposes but I am not satisfied at all with the images I capture with it.
I am planning on doing lot of hiking this spring and summer on the Appalachian Trail. Nothing over night, just separate trips on it as well in the local Northern GA mountains. I will also be doing a lot fishing, most likely inclement weather at time.
My Nikon is too heavy to take on these trips I do want a DSLR, not a mirrorless. The K50 is known for its weatherproofing. I thought I would just start out with an 18-55mm lens since is more compact and will allow me to take my scenery shots.
Anyone have suggestions, experience or advice on this setup?

The D7000 is a big camera. It's going to be a trade off but the only small DSLR's I know is the Canon SL1 or the Nikon D3300 although I don't thing any of those are weatherproof. Have you thought about an advanced point & shoot? Their a lot smaller than a DSLR and their large sensors will give you great image quality.

I just picked up the Pentax k-50 at BH photo with the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-300 telephoto zoom. The body is weather sealed as is the kit lens. The 55-300 isn't. The entire setup was $596.00 For a little less, you can get it with the 18-55 and a 55-200. Less reach, but both are weather sealed. Sounds like a great deal. Can't wait to try it out

Tis a shame you ruled out mirrorless. The original em5 is a steal at 379...add a 14-150mm (weather sealed version) and you have quite the lightweight combo.

Funny, I just checked and there is only 40 grams difference in the bodies. That surely can't be a big reason for a switch.

My mistake, the 40 grams was with battery. I still wonder about weight being a huge factor. I frequently shoot a 5DIII with battery grip and a 70-200 2.8L II with 2 batteries and I'm not really affected. I merely saw the change to point to another reason and weight is minor in this case. When it becomes heavy, I pick up a barbell ;)

Small camera, light/backpack, and fishing use.

Why not a water proof point and shoot?

Sensors on point and shoots are getting larger than ever and better than ever.

Not only that, I'd bet that your intended use is to post Facebook or leave your shots in the computer and/or email them to folks and MAYBE print a 5x7 once in a while...right?

All the more reason you don't need a DSLR.

How about the Canon Powershot GX7?

Or for that matter how about a phone. I totally understand wanting a dslr. I bougth an olympus mirrorless and I hate it. I need to look through a lens or at least a coupled viewfinder (ie m leica) to compose. The electronic accessory viewfinder did nothing at all for me.
