Not satisfied with it...
Color to B&W
Edit: What is needed to add some interest to this otherwise ordinary image?

Have a mouse hanging from the cat's mouth.

I think the light and overall appearance of the B/W version seems flat. I would try to enhance more the highlights and accentuate shadows to give it more contrast and "punch". Also the focus fell on the nose and not the eyes which would be the main interest in such a pic but nothing can be done about that. :|

The main subject of the shot is the cat's intense gaze, and for maximum impact both eyes would need to be sharp, but the cat's left eye is soft beyond recovery. I also think that the whole shot needs to be brightened a bit.

I describe the capture as 'ordinary' should be a clue as to what I think of it. The woman liked it, it was her cat but I really did not see it.

DOF is one of the missed setting as RG points out. I did not apply the 'corner of the eye' as point of focus either...

B&W is solely an exercise to try to make 'something' work.

Yes, the B&W is flat. I have trouble using contrast as details would just go away...

Then again, using separate adjustment might work, I will try that.

I said I thought that the shot needed lightening. If you led with lightening the shadows and adding a bit of contrast after the lightening, you'd probably find that the details remained at least as visible as they are now.

I didn't misunderstand - I was just following up on your comment "I have trouble using contrast as details would just go away..." I thought my suggestion to lighten needed a bit more clarification.

Definitely a better portrayal of the intense gaze.

I do not see anything so...

No worries but thank you for paying attention.

If the lady liked it then its a success. The eyes are not in focus so its never going to make the grade if your asking for ways to improve it. Its all about the eyes so quite simply the photographer blew it. I did the same yesterday with my cat Norman. Norman if he does not sit still will be visiting the taxidermist and my problems will be over. For you the lady may object to that proposal so retake it of you get a chance

Use a time machine to permit a re-take with increased exposure and deeper DoF to get both eyes in focus.

Edit: I've now seen the other comments and obviously agree with those of RG.
