Too much white

Okay, I'm admitting defeat. I took a bunch of pictures of my friend. Wearing a very white shirt. So it's the classic very white against darker skin and a darker background and whatever I do, it's still much too much white. I can't find any tool in the box to tone it down. I can bring it down a bit, but it's not enough.

I've been diddling with these all week and I can't believe I'm being defeated by a white shirt. I'm posting a few in 72 dpi. I use PS badly. I need to take a course or something. Well, I'm a whiz with Framemaker. Just not Photoshop.

There's another version with this elsewhere. LOVE the face. Hate the shirt!

A very wise man once told me, and the rest of the people in the room at Nikon School, "Not all your photographic problems have solutions." Once detail in highlights is lost, it is lost forever.

For next time, hopefully a re-shoot is possible, spot meter off of the white shirt to preserve highlights and then bring everything else up in PP. Either that or have her change shirts or put on a jacket ;-).

Good Luck!

Eric

I knew that. I just wanted to be wrong. She is one of those really camera shy people. It was a miracle to get ANY pictures of her. Oh well. Thanks.

Well... I'd say (judging from her smile)... that her spirit is SO radiant; it's shining through her clothes!

You may not be able to fix this, but cherish it anyway, since it's rare!

(My kids recently told me that. They asked me why there are so few photos of me from when they were growing up. I told them I do not consider myself very photogenic and I'd rather they remember me when I'm gone, the way THEY remember me and not as reflected in terrible pictures of me. Besides, I was always behind the camera taking photos of THEM! *grins*

They didn't buy it.
And in the years since... I've made sure to take photos of myself that they may have to reflect on when I'm gone... especially of me holding my g-children. :) )

Thanks. She IS my best friend. I was afraid if I said "could you not wear white" she'd run and hide. Again!

Tilde I am glad that you have allowed yourself to be photographed with your children. We did an 80th birthday party for my mom and wanted to have pictures of her with all of her children and grandchildren. We could find none of her with us her children.

I hope that I haven't taken too much liberty, but I edited the shirt and painted it a soft yellow. Hope you like it.

Do you mind if I take this into photoshop and try to tone down the white?

The problem has to do with the fact that the light meters are calibrated to take pictures as if the objects have a neutral grey (18%) tone. Therefore, pictures of a white object will come out "bleached". If your camera allows, point your camera at a "greyish" area, lock in the automatic exposure botton before you click. Other option would be to add 1 to 1 1/2 stops exposure adjustment if your camera allows. Photoshop will not help you with this issue. Too dark pictures can be adjusted to a certain degree, bleached out whites are gone for good since they do not leave any information that could be altered.

I know. The problem is that I made the same mistake that I tell other people not to make, but I was afraid if I suggested "anything but white" she'd spook. Just getting her to let me shoot was a very big deal. We've been friend for 40 years and these are among fewer than a dozen photos i have of her. And I was shooting FAST because i was sure she was gonna run. I always shoot center weighted, and usually spot, but i was concentrating on just getting some pictures, so I blew it.

The key to shooting white is in the exposure not in the photo shop. Remember over exposure in digital is the kiss of death highlites don,t like to tone down. Shoot it like slide film underexpose which means shooting manual and bracketing the shots. You take good photographes the last shot if compositon was good had winner on it.

Just a thought for next time. Best friend buy her a sweater of a color of your choosing. Give it to her and have her try it on. Have your camera ready and tell her you would like to photograph her in it. I doubt if she would object since you just gave her a gift.

I have given her SO much clothing (I lost a lot of weight at one point) I think most of her wardrobe used to be mine. But not THAT shirt. White linen is not for sloppy eaters (guilty).
