There are many. Sources to check are: Adorama, B,H, Epson, Western Digital and a Google search for more.

The photoman. Checked them all by phone-- all say no. All talk about portable storage, but none to connect direct to camera. If they have one, their people don't know about it.

This question has come up before over the past four months that I can remember. Before I proceed further, I would appreciate feedback from the Hogs as to the format of this response as well as, of course, other considerations and options I didn't list.

CONSIDERATIONS:
I suggest you better define what you mean by a storage device, e.g. one with or without an attached viewer and whether the devices contents can directly downloaded to your computer. Whether your laptop/desktop is a Mac or a PC can affect whether the device will work at all. There's a feature available on some tablets, but NOT iPads at this time (Apple restricts its use); I'm referring to a wireless communication system known as NFC. Also important is what volume of Storage, in GB, you expect you'll need if it's a temporary back-up you want. Part of the same "parcel" is whether you'll be shooting JPEGs, or RAW, or JPEGs + RAW.

By the way, I use an Apple laptop and an iPad and am currently determining for myself whether the Sandisk iXpand Flash drive is a practical option for me.

OPTIONS:
N.B. My impression (abbreviated 'imp') of each option, if any, follows each item.

A. the SD card itself is removed and can be put in one's wallet - imp: works, but there's no back-up;

B. an e-tablet - imp: limited space maxing out ~100 GB currently;

C. the Kingston mobile wireless G2 unit (called something like that);

D. Sandisk iXpand in sizes 32, 64, and 128 GB - imp: it's an oversized Flash drive because it has a built-in rechargeable battery (to spare draining one's iPhone) and has two male plugs: USB and Lightning; note that with iPads, its use is restricted to image, video, and iTunes files only!

E. Western Digital's Passport wifi external hard drives - imp: has a built-in SD card reader; the spindle drives come in both 1&2 TB sizes; I tried one but it was defective, so I returned it for a full refund, though two Hogs mentioned they use them and haven't had any problems thus far;

F. Wolverine and other brand image viewers - imp: so now you're going to shlepping another pair of batteries and a charger for this unit, too?

G. Wi Fi SD cards - imp: this doesn't fit your question as one still needs, like using NFC, some sort of storage device; I never tried them, but the Hog's consensus is that Wi Fi transmission is slow, hence impractical if you're shooting RAW; the only purpose I can foresee using them is if you have an U/W camera w/o a USB port that is either sealed OR opening/closing the seal is a major pain.

How's that for starters?

I use this:

http://www.ravpower.com/rp-wd03-filehub-6000mah-power-bank-portable-wireless-router.html

And it does a not more than just save files - no computer. I manage file transfers with my phone, tablet or computer. I paid $32 for mine.

Gene,
Perhaps I'm missing something here, but based on the content of the link you provided, this RAVPower brand device does NOT, per se, store image data. I could be wrong, but I believe the OP wants a portable device to STORE the image data on. All the RAVPower can do is act as in intermediary. Am I correct?

With the camera's USB cable and a USB hub, could this be used to transfer files from the camera's memory card to a USB flash drive?

Might work. Less expensive than say CamRanger.
Looks like you can transfer photos in real time to external device like a smartphone and I'm assuming a laptop. Could connect external storage to smartphone using an OTG hub or dongle.. You'd be using the phone as an intermediary device so I guess that's not quite what you're asking for. There are also a few external drives with built in WiFi hubs and write at USB 3.0 speeds. (Lacie/Seagate comes to mind)

Gene,

This may be the inexpensive answer to travel backup I've been looking for.
Could I plug an SD card and a USB HD into this device and copy files from sd to hd using phone or table?

The RavPower device is a hub and a bridge which allows many simultaneous connected devices. The question is can you browse those connected devices from your phone? Don't know if the RavPower hub/bridge has a built in file manager/viewer does it support DLNA protocols, i.e., does the device function as a DLNA server?? If so you could easily use a DLNA browser/app on your phone to view and manage digital photo files. It is inexpensive enough that one could purchase without regret and try it.

There are quite a few threads on this topic. Some of the devices come with a built in viewer so you can see the images. Some are just storage devices.

For $150.00 the WD Passport Wireless seems a popular choice. You can transfer wirelessly, through a USB or by inserting a SD card.

At B&H you can check "Memory Card Back-up Devices"
