Does anyone know of a portable storage devise to connect directly to camera without going through a computer
This question has come up before over the past four months that I can remember. Before I proceed further, I would appreciate
feedback from the Hogs as to the format of this response as well as, of course, other considerations and options I didn't list.CONSIDERATIONS:
I suggest you better define what you mean by a storage device, e.g. one with or without an attached viewer and whether the devices contents can directly downloaded to your computer. Whether your laptop/desktop is a Mac or a PC can affect whether the device will work at all. There's a feature available on some tablets, but NOT iPads at this time (Apple restricts its use); I'm referring to a wireless communication system known as NFC. Also important is what volume of Storage, in GB, you expect you'll need if it's a temporary back-up you want. Part of the same "parcel" is whether you'll be shooting JPEGs, or RAW, or JPEGs + RAW.
By the way, I use an Apple laptop and an iPad and am currently determining for myself whether the Sandisk iXpand Flash drive is a practical option for me.
OPTIONS:
N.B. My impression (abbreviated 'imp') of each option, if any, follows each item.
A. the SD card itself is removed and can be put in one's wallet - imp: works, but there's no back-up;
B. an e-tablet - imp: limited space maxing out ~100 GB currently;
C. the Kingston mobile wireless G2 unit (called something like that);
D. Sandisk iXpand in sizes 32, 64, and 128 GB - imp: it's an oversized Flash drive because it has a built-in rechargeable battery (to spare draining one's iPhone) and has two male plugs: USB and Lightning; note that with iPads, its use is restricted to image, video, and iTunes files only!
E. Western Digital's Passport wifi external hard drives - imp: has a built-in SD card reader; the spindle drives come in both 1&2 TB sizes; I tried one but it was defective, so I returned it for a full refund, though two Hogs mentioned they use them and haven't had any problems thus far;
F. Wolverine and other brand image viewers - imp: so now you're going to shlepping another pair of batteries and a charger for this unit, too?
G. Wi Fi SD cards - imp: this doesn't fit your question as one still needs, like using NFC, some sort of storage device; I never tried them, but the Hog's consensus is that Wi Fi transmission is slow, hence impractical if you're shooting RAW; the only purpose I can foresee using them is if you have an U/W camera w/o a USB port that is either sealed OR opening/closing the seal is a major pain.
How's that for starters?
