This is going to take some experimenting.
Here is the first effort
Canon T2i IR modified with Tamron 150-600mm

I'm enjoying your experiment. The downloads are great. Now that i've invested in Nikon, I'm seeing that Canon might have been the better move for astrophotography.

I think both camera makers are equally suited to the task.
Nikon does just as nicely as Canon once you get the basics down. It does take a little bit of patience and practice.
Best of luck to you and welcome to our corner of the universe.

Another single that I messed around with this morning.
I need to go smaller aperture and longer exposure I think.
This is pretty noisy.
The Moon shot is with the T2i as well. I wanted to test a bright object.

Dooh! Mooned again! :-P

First impression was, Meh! And first post, #3 I thought "orange?"
Then I started downloading, zooming, and liking.
Very nice Jim! Excellent even, for a first effort with the new modified camera, that you are beginning with.
I'd like to see what you get, (and I'll be watching) when you hook that puppy up to one of your telescopes.
Try and not overcook the bird, Buddy, in the programs.
I see enormous potential coming out and this is only a first effort.
Woo-Hoo! :)

To a point, Tom, I'd agree with you. I've seen some amazing photographs done with Canon gear.
But I believe the manufacturers chose to lean toward the PC side of the big picture.
Nikon has, and Orion has, and I believe many of the programs have as well. (Thinking Adobe, and the astronomy programming)
But Canon seems, IMHO, to have favored the Apple crowd. For example, most, or many of the friends I see with Canon cameras are almost, usually, always, sorta, nearly, allish, Apple computer folks as well.
Just an observation. And it gives me somebody to pick on, like Jim, who is pretty much a Conon-eer.

Thanks Sonny.
I might get to play again tonight if its not to darn cold.
It was around 24ish when I played last night and I was off to an early start.
Since I was shooting at 25 seconds, I'm pretty sure heat was not an issue with the camera given the ambient temperature.
It's pretty noisy for shooting at ISO 100.
I plan to try again and bring the aperture up to 11 or 14 and let it run for a minute or so to see what I can pull.
Going to have to do a better job of alignment than I did last night. My stars should have been points not smears.
Oh well, that's why it was a first effort.

You know, there is one of those pieces of space junk in your pictures, right?

Sensor noise is one of the things that makes me draw back from DSLR Astrophotography. And the time limiting of my camera.
I'm still OSC affectionate-toe. (One Shot Color) I like all the doo-dads, and ding-a-lings, but then, just spit out the picture Polaroid.
(I still cannot get anything to stack, even having shot some piles with my Nick-on during my downtime. :?: )
That is weird.

I'm hoping the CCD comes back able to take me deeper into nice pictures. The cooling, and now the no mechanism aspects of CCD imaging really appeal to me.

Just call me "South Forty Sonny." (Or maybe South Farty Sonny)

Yeah I knew it was there. It traversed 4 or 5 of my frames as I panned along.

If your line issue is gone, you should be able to stack really well from your CCD movie file. I use AutoStakkert II for that one version and it works really well for me. But we have had this conversation before.

South Farty Sonny? I'd hate to think you passed from the North.. your breath is already bad enough..

Beautiful start Jim. Much better than I did with it for a year.
Can't wait to see your Nebula shoots.

Thanks Craig.
I still need to piddle fart around with the white balance.
I have the custom WB set for Green for the white out effect I was showing you. I need to redo it for astro shooting and that may help quite a bit.
Too many settings and not enough minutes in the evening.
It took me forever to get aligned last night because the stars are not overly bright right now.
Did you try shooting Andromeda or the spiral with this setup? I'm wondering if it will pull them as well as my 7D did.
PS... I'm pretty sure I posted nebula shots here.. I picked on Sonny so I have to pick on you too.

Thanks again,
Jim

Great job on getting the data!!! You are definitely heading in the right direction IMHO. I hope you don't mind my playing around with your image. I fooled around with luminosity masks and made some selective adjustments pulling out the colors that are in your data but in doing so it got oversaturated.

Again, great job!!!!
