PSE 10 will not open "NEF" RAW files from my NEW Nikon D5500, but seems to work fine with my "NEF" RAW files from my Nikon D5100. Says (Cannot Open)....(because it is the wrong type of file). I have file type as "All Formats" Can anybody steer me correctly? Does it matter that my D5500 is recording at 14bit?

You need to read about RAW files, Nikon proprietary formats and how Adobe has to deal with them. Basically it is a series of rolling releases and updates to tables usually called "ACR" or "Adobe Camera Raw". Your software stopped upgrading as new software came out. Elements 10 is four years old. The 5500 is newer than that.

You get to buy new software or learn how to use Adobe's free DNG Converter.

Guess what, your camera is a new model.

It means you have to wait until the software catches up. Since it is Element 10, I am not sure it will... Time will tell you (and ACR)

PSE 10 may not be upgradeable beyond Camera Raw 6.7.

You can convert NEF to DNG (an Adobe format) with their free convertor. I use it, and although it seems clumsy at first, once you use it a couple of times it is real easy.

Open the program
Select, but do not open, the folder containing NEF files
Select, but do not open, the folder to save the DNG files
Select name, number sequence, or date
Click process.

You can save the DNG files to the same folder as the NEF files.

It took Adobe about 2 months to catch up to my D7200 when I bought it on the first day it was available. I gave up and shot in JPG until they had an update that included the new NEF file format. I did work with ACR, the software that came with the camera and tried other tricks. It all added way too many steps to my workflow. I was very happy when the ACR under the hood in LR CC got refreshed. Good luck.
