I just got a nice D5100, "Maunfacturer Refurbished," and I was glad to see that they didn't reset the shutter count to zero. I like that because I know what the camera has actually done. It came in a Nikon box just like the original, except that it's gray and marked "Refurbished Product." The camera and everything in the box looks like new, and I saved $100.

This is why I like to buy refurbished - haven't been burned yet.

The sale of my D5000 (with 2,864 clicks) will go a long way toward paying for the D5100.

I got a D70s on ebay with only 362 clicks and a D70 with 774. I had that converted to IR.

* http://regex.info/exif.cgi
* Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info.
* Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

Thanks. If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that, I'd be on my way to getting a candy bar.

Jerry, can you be a bit more specific about ExifInfo file. I googled it and got confused with a whole bunch of confussion. PS I also bought a refurb D7k with 1700 or so clicks on it.

The Exif data gives you more information than any normal person would need about an image, but it can also show shutter count, lens used, exposure, etc. The first photo is from Exiftool (free). The second is from Irfanview, an editing program, also free. For Irfanview, you have to download the free plug-ins to get the Exif reader. Both images below show about half of the info available. You'd have to scroll down to get the rest.

As usual, I know what I was thinking but didn't get it all down in words. What I was specifically asking for was the link to the Exif file.

Your answer really was informative as to the results. Sorry to be a pest; I'm sure lots of other viewers have gotten their interest in this program.

Now that I went back looking at the sample, I googled exiftool. Lo and behold, There are a bunch of links for that program including a Wikipedia entry!

Looks like Phil Harvey is the author of this and many more. Now I'm off to download it!
