Your lens needs to be at Minimum Focusing Distance to capture a true macro-photograph. With a 60-mm lens, that means a Minimum Working Distance (lens front element to subject) of just 90-mm (3.5-inches).

OK, Here is a quick and dirty macro shot
Hard to get a clean focus this close, even breathing messes with the focus. Guess I really need a stand so the camera is 100% perpendicular over the target to get an even focus. Fortunately my D300 has the capability of turning the flash intensity down.

Your Nikon D300 has a 24mm x 16mm sensor. A US quarter is 24-mm diameter, and a US dime is 17-mm diameter. You have successfully demonstrated one of the macro documentation exercises used to acquaint macro-photographers with Minimum Focusing Distance of a true macro lens.
