My son has been an iPhone guy for years, now a new father waiting for number two. He wants to buy a DSLR for typical family photos. He is looking at Canan eos series budget is 500-600. I do not know Canan at all. I sugested Nikon he is looking at that also. I have multiple lens and several duplicates. Can anyone make recommendations for either Nikon or Canon ? He will mainly shoot family and summers at Sea Isle. I sent him Bryan P book on exposure

Thanks
Joe

The Nikon D3300(or 3200) is a fantastic starter camera. Check out Cameta Camera. They usually have some great starter packages.

An excellent choice for a beginner as they include guide mode in the camera to assist the learning process. Add that to the wonderful 24MP sensor and you have a real winning package.
Also look at factory refurbished packages for great money savings.

All companies make very good cameras. But if you already use Nikon, then it would make sense for him to get a Nikon. You can help when needed and he can borrow lenses.

since you have suggested Nikon , and its the fact that you have "extra's"..I'm assuming Nikon ...In my opinion it sounds as tho the smart move would be for him to choose Nikon, that way you two could share lenses

This isn't really about buying a camera, it's about all the things wrapped around it. You are a Nikon guy, so I would recommend a Nikon solution here. Since I'm a Canon user I can't offer specific advice on Nikon models.

For Canon the latest things to look at would be the T6i or T6s, but for cost effective approaches with a few lenses a used T3i or T5i could be worth considering.

Good luck.

I don't age group so only talk of my experience.

I gave Grand daughter my T1i and 18-55 lens. I have several other Rebels and a 60D along with a great lens selection.

I thought was she can use the "Gifted" camera use any loaner glass bodies.

As a High School student she could use there equipment on school projects. They do have a wide and deep inventory of equipment including Pro bodies from Nikon and Canon.

There are so many lightly used equipment out there that are budget friendly. I look for wholesale priced pieces that have been under used.

Well actually Joe it's "Canon" but that's alright.

I've a Canon shooter and have had three of their dslr cameras, upgrading as I went, and I love these cameras.

There are several really good models available right now. I shoot the t3i which is excellent for both stills and full 1080 HD video. It's discontinued but there are still many available for excellent prices probably closer to $400.

If he's serious about Canon I highly recommend this model.

In the Canon the T3i has been mentioned. There is also the T2i that lacks an articulating screen. It is one of the most under valued bodies. an acquaintance bought one for the princely sum of 50 USD. I have seen some great images.

Lots of stuff on the net shooting on budget or with alternative equipment.
