Got an Email from Orion today....

As far as the ED80T CF Telescope...
They replaced the entire focuser and it is working properly now.

And a note on the focus knob cap... (it's a cap that goes over the 11 to 1 low speed side of the focuser. I only used it when it was in the case.)
The new focuser has slightly bigger knobs, so my old cap would not fit the new focuser. So they put a newer cap on the new focuser.
(Now I'm really curious about this new focuser. Bigger knobs?)

OK, so the rest of the story is... because it was New Years weekend, I waited until 1/4/16 to drop the telescope and CCD off at the UPS store. It left there at 5 PM.
It was delivered Wednesday morning to Orion.
It is repaired and on it's way back today.
Way to "Git Er Done" Orion!

No word on the CCD yet, but it got there the same day.
I did get an email that is an "Order Acknowledgement" for an "Incoming Warranty Repair" Price 0.00 with a stock status of 01/22/16
I can't be sure that is the CCD, but suspect it is.
Looks like a replacement to me. Hope I get a gooden if it is. ;)
I'm going to call tomorrow morning to ask about it.

Both emails are dated today, 01/08/16.
Happy Dance!

OK..
So that Order Acknowledgement was for the focuser.
Just paperwork.
No word on the CCD yet.

But.... I'm still happy!

Great customer service!

Thank You!
What few times I have contacted Orion, I've always come away happy. :)

Not so much with my mount though... :?

The focuser on my refractor telescope is basically the whole back end of it. Major parts.

I wouldn't expect it back before Tuesday, at best.
I would advise you uncross your fingers so you don't get cramps.
Thanks!

I wonder if they will just send a new one?
I would think that labor and parts would cost more than just trading out.
Good luck Sonny.

For the CCD, I would think so.
But this would be the second time it was replaced by them. The first one, the cooling fan didn't run.

I called and asked how do you switch on the fan?
"Wait, the fan doesn't run?"
"Umm, no. The fan has never run. I thought maybe I missed a step on how to switch it on."
"We are sending you a new camera. Just put the old on in the box and use the enclosed per-paid shipping label."
Me being me, the only thing I took out of the box was the camera. Not the cables or anything else.

I am confident they will do whatever it takes to make things work right. And likely, replace the camera.
As long as I can get pictures like they advertise, I'll be happy.

Unless you have the 11" SCT I wouldn't expect to get quite the resolution they get in their shots.
As for me, I bought a Celestron 9.25" SCT w/10:1 Focuser and expect delivery next Wed. Max weight for the Celestron AVX.
And I sent my Nikon D600 FX Camera off for the (420-680nm) IR Conversion and expect delivery next Tues.
I'm still a DSLR fan, too many CCD horror stories about the less expensive ones and I can't afford $2000.00+ for a Mono and Filter Wheel.
I should be setup for some pretty decent Astrophotography.

I found a new video on the Orion Site about Color Vs: Mono CCD cameras....
It's all in a filter matrix over the sensor. No other differences in resolution, There is a video in the Video Gallery here:
http://www.telescope.com/Astrophotography/Astrophotography-Cameras/Orion-StarShoot-G3-Deep-Space-Color-Imaging-Camera/pc/-1/c/4/sc/58/p/101351.uts

Do note the telescope and camera in the video files.

I'm not getting any packages but I did have clear skies and shoot some Orion Nebula shots. I'll see what I got after dinner.
Yes with the modified cam.

Cool! I bet you have a blast with the new SCT! Now... if we could get some clear clean skies.
The other night the stars were absolutely amazing through the rain washed skies.

Yep, I'm really curious about the new focuser. Something about the knobs being bigger. :?: And Adam (tech) supplied a new cap because my original wouldn't fit the new knobs.
So I'm really wondering about that. New and improved?
He said it was working smooth and as it should. So that's a major improvement right there.
All I can say is the cap he is talking about is a protective cap for in the case, as far as I know. I thought it was just for transport.
The focuser is basically the entire back end of the telescope.

No email about the CCD, so maybe a letter in with the one that is coming? (Be it repaired or replaced)
I just want the photographs as advertised, without a lot of fallderall.

I went out and looked around with our 10X50mm Bushnell Binoculars this evening, but it's cloudy. At least it was anyway.
I could make out a lot of stars, and Orion, but hand held leaves a lot to be desired in my hands.

So I guess I will go back to sitting on my hands again.
The waiting is always the hardest part.

Well I was holding my own hands so that I didn't touch anything.. does that count?
Posted and its fair for a first effort.
I need to tweak and play with color balance.

Well, just don't tell us you were playing pocket pool to occupy yourself while waiting.
I imagine you will quickly get everything just to your liking.
There is no 'Sperience like Experience.

My stuff is bouncing down I-5 from South San Fransisco. Due on the porch tomorrow afternoon.
I'll be at my dentist's... :XD:
