A means you pick the Aperture (or F stop, f4, f5.6, f8, etc.) and the camera picks the shutter speed.
S means you pick the shutter speed, and the camera picks the F stop.
P means the camera picks the F stop and shutter speed.

Do you ever use M? It's the only one I ever use. Then you control everything. Saw some photos from an event some one took on Auto. You can really tell the difference from mine and theirs. Back lit subjects were all dark, no detail in the photos especially portraits.
