This looked like it would be a nice BW. But seeing does reveal some issues. All of the dark areas have nearly the same density and sort of get lost in each other. Or is it the ipad I'm using?

No I think you are seeing it correctly.

AzPicLady, what do you mean by "nearly the same density"? Does this mean that there is something preventing it from being a good black and white? Or does it mean Judy has more work to do in post? I am very much trying to figure out what makes good b&w's and what does not.

I took it to mean that there isn't much variation in tones. It does need more work in post, but I am not sure it will ever be a great B&W

Yes it does perhaps need more work. But as Judy said, it might not work. Simply put there's not enough variety in the grey.

I think it would work much better if the walls were wooden and the sky had some clouds. Even the ice on the ground is one color without much detail.
I wish we could have gotten closer but we had to shoot from the road. I think I could have gotten more detail. I wonder if a crop removing much of the foreground would help it some. I like the foreground as it strengthens the fact that this house was built on a hill.

Judy, I think I've managed to coax a little more contrast and detail out of the dark area in Lightroom. Here's what adjustments I made: contrast -30; highlights -100; shadows +48; blacks -31; clarity +19; Sharpening amt 20/radius 1/detail 25/ masking 0. On seeing it in the gallery, I think I sharpened it too much. You can see it here:

Hope you don't mind me messing with your picture.

That is a much better edition. I agree it is over sharpened you have a bit of haloing going on. I will try those adjustments on it.

It depends on the photo. Some of them for some reason I have poured my heart and soul into and can't stand others messing with them. This one isn't one of those so you are safe.
I do prefer if you ask first, but you are forgiven this one time as you made it look oh so much better.

Judy, I wonder how selective coloring would work with this image.

Judy, you know the old saying "It is easier to beg forgiveness than get permission." I will ask first next time.
