I recently upgraded to a full frame Nikon camera and my old Tameron Telephoto will no longer do. I am considering purchasing a Nikon 70-300 AF-S 4.5-5.6G vr. I know they can be had for between $300-400 used in good condition. I shoot mostly travel and landscapes and I would like to keep my budget no more than $600. Any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks

They've been selling for less than that on ebay. You shouldn't have any trouble getting one in that price range.

Don't forget about KEH.

What are your thought on the quality of the lens given how inexpensive it seems to be. Should I save more $$ and go for something newer?

I've had one for several years and loved it. When my nephew saw some prints from it he went out and bought one.

Take a look at the buy/sell section at fredmiranda.com
This is an terrific site to buy, sell and trade camera gear. The members are photo enthusiasts with excellent feedback from many transactions.

Also, you can consider the Tamron. It got a nice review here:

I have this lens, bought it in 2007, and for the price it does a pretty good job. It does get soft around 270-300 mm.

Look at the NEW Tamron 70-300mm VC lens, its only $449 AND they have a $100 rebate right now making it only $349 after rebate PLUS you get a 6 Year Warranty. Why buy used????

Certainly, if you can buy new within your budget, that would be the way to go. I was interested in a Fuji 14 2.8 which retails for $899. I purchased it in LN condition with original box, soft pouch, paperwork, lens caps and hood for $475, from an excellent seller on fredmiranda.com without a problem. I have bought and sold fine used gear on UHH, eBay, and other sites and saved hundreds. Sometimes, it's the only way to get something affordable.

You have already gotten some good suggestions. My main concern would be the need for a faster lens than what you are considering. You say you shot mostly travel and landscapes. The lens will do quite well for landscapes under most conditions. However, depending on what you mean by "travel" a faster lens might be a better alternative, even if it means a shorter reach.

Thank you for all your suggestions I will check Fred Miranda. And I guess do a little more research before I purchase.

My thought is, if your budget is $600, and used lens are going for $300/400. You will be saving between $200 and $300.

I second keh.com. Have had good luck there, maybe not as cheap as ebay or Craigslist, but no worries. They're highly regarded at the Hog and their rating system is honest.
