I have good lenses 100mm and down. And I have been looking for a lens that zooms to 400mm. But everything I have looked at seems to have some major flaws. I may be asking the impossible, but can anyone recommend a 400mm zoom without major image problems??

I've used tho old Sigma 100-400 for both Nikon and Canon. Not the best lens originally, but sombody flipped Sigma's switch, and now they turn out some impressive glass

I hired a Canon 100-400 for an air show, and was impressed. The main reported "fault" of this lens is the push-pull zoom, but I had no problem with it, as I found it very easy to use. But then, I was brought up on the "one-touch" zooms of the 70s.

I would suggest the Canon 100-400 Lens, it is a push pull zoom, but you can adjust the tightness of the zoom
Here is a photo that was taken a few weeks ago, it was shot from down the third base line beyond first base

I realize you specified "to 400", but I would like to suggest the Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM, (big Mamma, as some call it). Mounts are for both Canon, Nikon, Pentex, Sony, etc.

I agree with the 100-400 Canon zoom. I bought mine used from Adorama with no problems for about a 35% savings from new. I shoot with it more than any other lens I own.

The Canon 100-400mm is a hard lens to beat. It lives on my 50D Love it. Do a search for it and you will find quite a few threads about it and almost everyone loves it.

The Canon 100-400mm f4.5/5.6 IS L lens. I've got one and it's my second choice in lenses - second only to my 500mm f4.

I have the Sigma 50-500 OS called the Bigma. Build quality, IQ, AF and OS are very good on my Nikon D7000 (also available on the Canon). Many folks have this lens and if you do a search here on the Sigma 50-500 and similar design 150-500 you can judge for yourself.

you didnt mention your budget?
A 500mm L lens is not cheap.
Might look for a 300mm F4 (I have one and love it) and add a 1.4x converter. Will take you to F5 but still get I.S and auto focus and less cost then the big 500mm.
I do find many times that I can't use my 300 for I am too close, but I did try the 100-400 and found I was always at 400 and din't like the push pull. Not to mention when I was @400mm it is a 5.6. A friend has the Sigma 150-500 and likes it. It is a hefty lens. I have not tried it. I did read the reviews and it didnt rate well all the way out @500/ hope that helps

Hi, I have the Canon 100-400 and it's a very good lens. It isn't as fast as I'd like but it would be much more expensive if it were. You can find it at a decent price but it will never be cheap. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
