I can't believe the deal I got today on a Nikon D5500 w/18-55 mm lens! I happened to stop into my local Best Buy store after making a bagel run this morning. I stopped in the camera section, as always, and couldn't believe my eyes! $499!!! Brand new limited time only offer and not an open box special! This offer wasn't listed in their weekly ad or anywhere on the Best Buy website. The best price I could find anywhere on the web (including B&H and Adorama) was $350 more!!
I have just come out of some hard financial times and have been looking for a new dslr after having sold mine last year. I obviously couldn't pass this deal up.
The kit lens is fine to start given my recent hard times but hope to purchase a better all purpose lens in the next few months. Anyone have any suggestions?

The Nikon 18-140 should do very nice with that camera...well for starters anyway :)
An excellent basic camera, and the lens ain't bad either! I was pleasantly surprised with the resolution of this particular kit lens.

today in my area they have the D3300 with lens and bag for $499.00 I think someone screwed up, smile and send a thank you to the camera gods.
there are many great lenses to choose from, depending on what you plan to photograph. I would recommend buying fx lenses, as if you ever decide to move to a full frame camera you will not have to reinvest in lenses. that said, I would start with a ??/300 mm lens as it will give you all the coverage you will need for a while. not sure what the lower end is in fx, I think it is 28mm. from there I would get a 50mm f/1.8 for landscapes and closeup portraits. also a great lens for street photography if you are into that. from there, your budget is your guide, your d5500 will take great photos, and your lenses will be your most costly investment. save your money and choose wisely. when in doubt, rent a lens you think you want and test it out first. small investment to save a costly mistake.
I had a similar experience with Best Buy last month. The Nikon 80-400 4.5-5.6 G VR lens was clearance priced at $1483.99, and the Nikon 16-35 f4 G VR was $629.99.
Both lenses were USA, new, in the gold Nikon boxes. The sales person had no explanation.
I was at the same Best Buy this past week and while the 16-35 was no longer displayed, but the 80-400 was back to a competitive price of $2299.99.
Very strange. Clearly, one should keep an eye on Best Buy prices.
You are very lucky !!--I just paid $700.00 for just the D5500 CAMERA body--- I FELT ill after I seen this in the Sunday newspaper--I did the math a few different ways,, AT WORST I'm paying 90% more then you are -----I could of exchanged the camera for a F1.2 NIKON LENS, And then buy the D5500 at ''BEST BUY'' , but I couldn't justified spending another $555.00 to save $400.00---I told Nikon, this is the first & last Nikon anything that I buy ,because I felt taken advantage of -It's my understanding that the sale PRICES are to be consistent among vendors--- Not happy !!!!!!!!!!

You lucky bastard. Exceptional deal for an exceptional camera.
I got the same deal! My husband and I were standing at the front door when it opened yesterday with the newspaper ad in hand. We both looked for a price disclaimer on the store window but there was none to be found! Plus we used the Best Buy charge card which is giving us 12months interest free! I'm still pinching myself. Happy New Year to us!

I actually bought an 18-55 for a lightweight, walk around lens and love it.

Walk around snap shots maybe. But for critical shooting it sucks.
