Did my taxes last Sunday at HR Block and e-filed the return. Block called me back Monday saying Sam kicked it back because someone used my number and filed before I did. Block filled out a identitiy theft form and I mailed that with my return last Tuesday. Has anyone here had that happen and if so what should I expect from the government and what about next year? I've had that number for fifty years and have filed with HR Block the last ten years.

you need to contact all threee credit bureaus and put an alert lock on your credit. anyone tries to open a charge account with your number the credit bureaus call you first. I would also contact the IRS. if another person filed with your soc security number, then they have an adress and police can be notified

Man, I'm sorry to hear that.
It never happened to me, but there was a lady in Tampa whose husband was a police officer killed in the line of duty. Someone stole his SS number and filed. It took her a year to get it straightened out.

Been there, done that!
This is a "gotta do it now" thing. No waiting, no "I'll do it tomorrow"...........
Contact all three credit bureaus and have a 'fraud alert' placed on your credit. All charges made on your credit will be verified by you prior to them being allowed.

Here is Equifax Fraud alert URL

A TV station did a story on that a week or so ago. As it happens as the reporter was doing the story she found out it happened to her (her husband died last year). Seems that the SS#s of the deceased are not protected. The reporter said it would take MONTHS for the IRS to sort it out. Sorry, if you're due a return it will be held till everything is figured out. I also heard on the same report that the IRS paid out over a BILLION dollars in fraudulent claims last year. I guess they think they're ENTITLED (the crooks that is).

There are always those who want something for nothing, usually at someone else's expense

The op 's problem is easy to fix ...... the IRS knows the address of the other individual. It's probably a simple error, typing a wrong number.

Report the situation to anyone you have done business with. Banks, major dept stores etc etc etc. You should talk to an attorney immediately, and get professional advice.

It probably wouldn't hurt to notify your congressman.

Is that kind of like asking the weasel to look into one of your chickens being stolen?

It is hard to believe that it could be otherwise.

Cheers,
