I just ordered the 6 inch Garmin GPS. I have never used one and need help. Can you charge it and input a street address in a specific area before hand. I am going to Las Vegas and will be taking it on the plane with me. Can I input the resorts address before hand and just tell it to take me there once I land and pick up the rental car? Or do I have to wait until I am in the car to input the resort address?
TIA,
zuzanne

You can program it in the house. Sometimes I will program it on the porch so it can connect to the satellites.
Thank you for your help. I am not as tech savvy with some of these things as I would like to be.

You can program it at home and save the location in the GPS. When you arrive in LV and get your rental, plug it in. It will take a few seconds for it to locate the satellites, once found it will know your location and the location of your destination. Just follow the directions it tells you, right to the front door of where you are going! When you are ready to go back to the airport just type in McCarran Airport and it will take you there!!! Have Fun

I've had a Garmin for some 5+ years now. Don't know what the new ones are like now but on mine I had to change the state initially and then input a new address.
Works great and kept me from getting lost.
You can enter the address whenever you want, personally I always leave it until I am due set of on my journey.
You can input both your final destination and way points. One trip a couple of years ago I programmed a New Mexico destination with a start in PA and a detour to Cheyenne WY.
PS: I have it mounted where it is just a quick glance to view with the road still in my peripheral view. That way I can mute the voice instructions. "Lily the Lip" gets annoying.
It also helps to have your co-pilot available to note any up coming route changes

You'll love it! It can do a,lot more than take you to an address. Gradually learn all its capabilities. Be sure to update the maps when they are available.

"It can do a,lot more than take you to an address."I forgot about that! the Garmin can also tell you where the nearest gas station or cafe is, altitude or time to destination. It is a great tool.
You will love it and use it even when you already know the directions, just for the security.
After you have an address in, remember to save it to saved location. You can give it a name to help remember the Saved locations, if you have a large number of addresses.
Enjoy!
Garmin has a free download "Base Camp" which will enable you to plan and program your adventures. there is also a way to geotag your photos but I haven't explored that function. Hell, there are a lot of things you can do with using base camp.
In addition to your destination address, put in local addresses, and your house- places you go to all the time, and leave them in there permanently. Funny when you find yourself wherever, how nice to know if you should turn left or straight to get home. You can take it with you on foot to get you back to your car too, in fact- do not leave it in sight when parking, they get stolen ALL THE TIME.
Garmin seems to have an uncanny ability to accurately compute ETA,down to the exact minute. ( recalculates after a pit stop) better then any other I have used- like phone, in-car Nav systems, or other makes. . Your GPS has some settings you should set- like avoiding toll roads, or unpaved ones, etc. All sorts of cool stuff. You hook up to your computer and can enter routes using their free computer app, or it will compute on the fly. Also using the cord it came with, if there is a bulge in the cord, this is traffic navigation antenna, that will alert you to traffic jams, or slowed traffic and will automatically give you detours... (if yours has all these features and you are in an area that broadcasts this info.) Yep, it has gas stations and shopping and attractions in there, service stops on toll roads etc.
These GPS's are way cool, but, like your camera, you can get by right out of the box, but I would suggest you take the time to learn how to get the most out of it. Use it around home to get used to it.
As RichieC suggested, the first address you should input and save is your home address. Then no matter where you are (even hundreds of miles from home) the Garmin can get you started in the right direction. There have been many times that I've taken the road less traveled and used the Garmin to get me out of a 'where the hell am I' moment.
Will you have to put it into airplane mode (transmitter off)?
As a safety precaution, do not put your exact home address in. In case of theft or loss, you do not want a stranger knowing your address. Mine's programmed for my street, but a non existent house number close by.
Also, when you pick up your rental, you will be in a covered building. It may take a few minutes for the satellite to find the garmin, so know your first turn out of the parking garage.
