Readying to dive in with a Sony a7RII but have questions about using Canon lenses, mostly L glass, adapted to fit. Any horror stories? Any ideal adapter suggested to make best use of Canon glass with the Sony?.

Jerzee, jeezzzz, do you think Canon lenses work better on a Canon or a Sony??
If it was me, I'd dive into the Canon pond if I were gonna use Canon lenses!! What's WRONG with this picture?!?!

I use my Canon L lens with my Sony a7rll and have had no problems. Just purchase the new metabones adapter. It is expensive but it's worth it. The 70-200ll works great as well as the 100-400ll, 85 1.2 takes great images as well. I would not worry about it one bit. I still use my 1dx but that Sony is an amazing camera.

There are various reports. Some quirky behavior with some lenses. Some work great, some barely. Check the Metabones site--they list compatible lenses.

I have the Metabones adaptor for my Sony A6000. I find that it will focus with the Canon L lens but it is much slower in focusing. There are times that it will not focus if the scene is real "busy". I then switch to manual focus. It certainly will not be satisfactory for action shots.

Word is that compatibility is much better with the A7Rll, but not perfect by any means. Really a shame that the native lenses are so limited.

A month ago I was in the local camera store and my manager friend there had a conon L lens on the a7Rii and I handled it and took a couple of shots. AF was slow. This was with the foto??? adaptor which is faster than metabones and less expensive.

As I have said before about this incident, don't tell others that I used a great Sony camera with a non-Sony lens. I will deny it happened. LOL.

Here's an interesting analysis of "How well do Canon lenses work on the Sony A7R II with an adapter?"

Thanks for sharing that! I posted a question about this very issue a while back and of course got lots of opinions from folks who don't use the combination! I have a Canon 7D Mark II with lots of Canon Glass. I'd love to one day dive into the Sony a7rII based on all the reviews and it would be very good to know that all my Canon L glass will still work. Nice to hear from someone who actually does it!

Interesting. I'm often at odds with Ken Rockwell's opinions, but as a Canon shooter it would be easy for me to agree and say Canon wide angle lenses suck on the A7R II. However, to be fair, I have no personal experience with that and this is the first I've heard of it. I'd be interested if others had a similar experience. I also wonder what the result's would have been if he had pitted a 5DIII, instead of a 5Dr, against the A7R II. The issue he raises seems to be edge sharpness rather than just resolution. Also he was not using a Metabones adapter, which for many seems to be the adapter of choice for the A7R II. I also just looked at his example in high rez and even in the center the shots from the Canon seemed sharper. I also preferred the Canon color rendition, but of course others will disagree. While, his test and examples are an interesting addition to the ongoing conversation about these two cameras, they are not definitive proof of anything.

I guess it just leaves me wondering on thing... Why?

Why not just use Canon lenses on a Canon camera?

What will the A7RII do for you that some Canon model doesn't?

Quite a bit. Much better high ISO performance, more than 2EV better dynamic range and better color depth, not to mention in-camera stabilization for non-stabilized lenses.

The Sony also has considerably better video features.

For what its worth, none of those differences seem to have come into play in the images captured by Ken Rockwell. I'm not a big Rockwell fan and often takes what he says with a grain of salt, but in normal day to day use, the 4K video aside,I don't believe the A7R II enhanced capabilities are quite as significant as some would have us believe.
