Happy New Year! And welcome to the Hog.

First question: Is there a card with some images in the reader when you plug it in? I find that my card reader doesn't show up if I pug it in before putting a card into it.

I am not familiar with Get Photos - and if your computer is a Mac I won't be any help at all.
However, on a Windows computer, put your card in the reader, plug the USB plug into a USB port on your computer, and in a few seconds a Window should pop up asking you what to do with the contents of the reader.
I usually click that pop-up window away and open Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder with the photos.
In Windows Explorer, you'll find the (C: ) drive, if you have a second hard drive it will likely be (D: ), and further down should be any other drives you have and that are plugged in.

After all that, don't forget to un-mount (Safely remove) the card before you unplug the reader or take the card out of the reader.

PS - It's unfortunate that you didn't put any information in your profile. From that, other UHH members can often deduct how computer-savvy a new member is. Without having any idea at all of that, I often have the feeling that I'm talking down to a person....

How did you determine you last card reader was bad, if it acts the same as the new one maybe it is a USB port or driver issue.

OK let's start with some basic information so we can help...
What version of MAC OS do you have?
What card reader do you have?

Did you try to connect camera rather than the Reader to computer? If so any errors?

Go to the terminal and type "diskutil list". No quotes, see if your drive is listed. Check for the icon denoting a mounted drive and if present drag it to the trash , then disconnect the card reader, wait a minute and reconnect. If the drives shows up in the list command, I can help you mount it, but need to know the drive name.

Wow complicate the simple. I have had this problem many times over the life of W-7 .... my solution is simple... get rid or the USB driver entirely... WHAT!! Yep, then when you inset the USB drive windows will say "hay, new drive shall I get drivers" click sure... do it. Windows will then search and rebuild the needed drivers.

HOW? Start/control-panel/Device-Manager/Univesal-Serial-Bus
USB are at the bottom of the list of devices. Click on the + to expand the list. There will be one or more of the USB drives that is with a ! or yellow triangle. Click to highlight and hit delete or right click and chose delete. Then close and plug in the "unknow" drive and the driver will build.

Your system may not work that way... so make do some googling and read up on the subject. I am not a certified IT manager rather a hack.

The only problem is the OP says they have a MAC, not Windows. The solution is most likely simple we just need some more info.

I can under stand why DB Cooper would not give information when asking a question... but this is not DB. Why do people force people to play 20 questions and ask for an answer... and more puzzeling to me is why do we bother to say any thing excepte... NO REPLY UNTIL YOU GIVE DETAILS the only one person needs to say that.... no more replies til the info is, as detective TV says "forthcoming."

So let the OP look up for your MAC like I did on the "Windows"

The reference I gave says
"As a last resort (LAST RESORT !! why last??) , try the Uninstall button to uninstall the driver, then click OK and choose Scan for hardware changes in the Action menu."

I have learned to as Bob Dilan would sing "Last will be first"...
Yes I may move to another port...but if that does not work... delete or uninstall will be my next move.

For MAC similar... here is a start on "self education":

Do the following for us: Click on the Apple icon in the upper lefthand corner of your screen. Select "About This Mac" and then "System Report" then expand the USB tab (click on the USB tab) in the left column. Once the USB hub and connected devices are exposed take a screen shot and post the screen shot.

Alternatively just launch the terminal window (from launchpad) and type the following command: "diskutil list" (just the words not the quotes) and then select return. An entire list of all the attached disks will appear. Expand the terminal box to full screen and the take a screen shot and post it.

I found the answer why the card reader did not work. there is a lock on the SD card on the side and the SD card was locked. when I opened it up I was able to load my photos into the Adobe softwarer
