I have a smaller Sony WX9, and, like the RX100, it has a small battery that doesn't last nearly as long as DSLR batteries. You can't get a gallon out of a pint container.
Yeah, but who needs a gallon of Ice Cream in one sitting?
Well, OK Vanilla Bean......

I have eaten a half gallon, or three pints, depending on how it was packaged, at one sitting. I would sometimes have a bowl and then go back for another and then a third. After that, I figured I might as well bring the container back with me and finish it off. After a while, I wised up and saved the dirty dish, eating directly out of the container. Of course, I wait for it to be on sale, or refurbished - never used. :D
Stewarts still sells actual half gallon. I think Hershey does, too.
Sony is into their 4th model for the Rx100. I love this little camera. Each progressive model has added improvements.
Up until Model 3, which I have, there was no EVF, only the rear screen, which was impossible in high sun. The 4th version has a sensor that provides very low light capability. I went to a Sony event with Sony reps. They actually steered me away from the model 4, but I can't remember the reason.
As with any tech thing that pumps out new models every couple of years, prices drop for earlier models. So you can get a Model 1 for around $400 or a little more...and it will be a great camera, but if you want an EVF or very low light capability, you'll pay more.
Bottom line, this is a great camera. All models produce high image quality and are a joy to use...with an aftermarket little hand grip to help with hold-ability.
I hope this is a help.

I have been looking at the various models that sony has to offer and I really can't see a big difference between them except for price. $400 up to $900.
Can you clear this up for me.
thanks

I buy toys, so I have the M2, M3 and M4. My feeling is that the M3 is a good candidate for most photography; however, depending on your type of photography, the M4 may be a better choice. You should objectively write down your photo needs then go back and match them with the various models.
I have found that the RX100 series are really great cameras and depending on my goal for the day, many times I leave the house with my M4 and leave my D810 at home.

And they are now seeking employment. :D

The IV has some unique features, including 4K video.
Sony is seems to be clever. They are keeping at least two, if not three of the RX100 versions in production. You can pick what meets your wishes.
Small cameras with bigger sensors and lenses big enough to out shoot smartphones are a good market when DSLRs are declining in appeal. More choices are coming.
I agree the mark2 offers a more versatile lens and that accessory flash ability. I have done very well without the evf. I keep the screen on daylight setting and have had no problem framing photos.
