Old Sigma vs New Sigma

Hi All -

I am an enthusiastic amateur who has derived great pleasure from using my Sigma 150-500 f5-6.3 handheld on my D810 for nature shots like the attached royal tern preparing to dine on a shrimp. My question is whether or not there is an appreciable difference (pardon the ambiguous phraseology) in quality between that lens and the contemporary version of the Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3 besides the obvious additional 100mm of focal length.

Thank you.

I'd be interested in views on that as well. Might upgrade my wife.

I can tell you that the new Nikon 200-500 is a significant improvement over the Sigma 150-500. I still have both...the Sigma now handed down to my wife ( it is lighter ad has a less imposing hood).

The Nikon images are clearer, the VR awesome, and focus very fast compared to the Sigma.

I use it on my D5300 when I want more reach. Otherwise on D800.

Of course this may not be of interest for non-Nikon owners.

I believe that your shot, with whatever lens, is amazingly good. Ask yourself what advantage the newer lens would have given you if you had it and had used it. For me, technique and ability, which comes from practice, are far more important factors. I'm a old sports guy, trying to become decent at BIF. It's not going too well as I have not really had the time to practice. Best of luck! Happy Holidays.
