British Soldiers is the common name for this lichen. The red caught my eye while hiking today. Any comments or additional pictures are welcome.

Interesting! Nice variety of images.

Due to its tiny size, it is difficult for us to comprehend the scale of this lichen. When possible, try to take one photo with a small, commonly recognizable scale, such as a U.S. dime.

Thanks for the compliment. I'll try to keep your suggestion in mind when shooting small subjects. These were quite small. The tallest ones were less than a half of an inch high.

Thank you. I don't see these too often. These were on an old stump in the middle of a clearing in the state forest.

Are these only found in the Americas as I have never seen or heard of these before? (not that I would have ever looked for them anyhow) I immediately thought of the red coats when i saw these. Very good.

From what I have read on these, they grow only in the northeast USA and into Canada. I have never really considered Wisconsin as northeast USA, but perhaps in this case it is within that area of range.
