Sailing to Cuba in late Jan. Will have 7 days there and want to photograph people, cars, street scenes (Havana), sailboat races and everything else. Have a Nikon D300 with 18 - 55 kit lens. Any suggestions on an additional lens to take?

Whichever ones that allow you to take the photos you want

I envy you I would love to go but health issues prevent. I don't shoot Nikon but I do believe the 300 to be a great body.

I don't know your style so will speak generally. Light tripod. Upgrade lens to wider faster zoom. 50 & 85 prime. travel light and fast.

The kit lens would work for the shots you anticipate taking.

You could consider a lens with a longer reach, like the new Sigma 17-70mm lens.

Both lens would allow you to travel light, too.

Happy New Year!

Yes, a travel zoom lens could work, too. The new Sigma 18-250mm lens would serve your purpose. And again, this one lens would let you travel light. Enjoy.

Happy New Year!

I agree. I have the Sigma 18-250 on my D7000 almost all the time. I use a 50 f1.8 for some things. Those are usually what I take with me on a shoot. As the Sigma is also image stabilized I usually don't bother with a tripod when traveling. I believe less equipment is better.

It would be best for you to have 2 lenses, one wide 10-20 mm or something close to that and then a 18-200 or 18-300 or something in that range. Then you have everything covered.

I have basically those two lenses also. I use the zoom for a walk around (in camera cropping) and the 50 for lower light.

I am going to Cuba in January and will be taking a 20mm prime and a 14-45mm zoom. I use an Olympus OMD so you need to double those numbers for the 35mm equivalent.
The 20mm prime is very compact so is ideal for street scenes and landscapes etc so it will stay on the camera most of the time.

If you like people photography you really need a lens with a longer reach - something that will get you 50-250mm or so. I used that a lot in Cuba. The people are very friendly and photographing them was not a problem - it is unusual enough that sometimes I got a little attention, but never felt any anger. There are some nice places where a wide-angle could be nice, but you can also shoot a few to stitch together for panoramas also.

I was there in June and used a canon 24-70 for nearly 90 percent of the time. Plus, a 50mm 1.8 for lower light shots. These two were plenty for me especially with all the walking we did. Keep the weight light!
