Quite a few years ago I googled and we rented an A frame in up a mountain outside Gatlinburg (which is touristy). It was nice and quiet and we were able to avoid all the tourist stuff. Smoky Mountain National Park was right there, as well. The rental was reasonable.
I doubt if she'll want to ski in April.

You might want to check out the Casino in Cherokee on the web. It's right at the Smokes. Just a thought.

Townsend on the Tennessee side or bryson city on the north Carolina side are very nice and not very expensive.

Yep, I won't be skiing - I've only ever touched snow twice in my life, I don't think I'd be much good on a set of skis. lol.
