The Old Days

All the chatting about our various photography histories made me think about my stringer days. The enclosed pic is part of a long series of a controlled house fire in 1981. I covered the local volunteer Fire Department's burn that day of a condemned building, which made way for the Buckland Hills Mall, one of Connecticut's largest malls.

My equipment was my Pentax MX plus my 50/1.7 and my 28~85/3.5. The film was TRI-X, shot at ASA 400(remember?).

This shot alone pulled in over $200 in stringer fees (not bad for those days), and made the UP national wire. I also sold 6 other shots for that day's fire.

Nice shot, John. I'm happy for you that you have some of those old shots from the "stringer" days.
I lost 10s of thousands of negs & proof sheets (mostly Tri-X) from doing the same stuff in the '70s. They're somewhere on the side of the road between Wisconsin and Vegas. Well, probably not anymore!
Thanks for posting your photo!

I remember TRI-X. As I recall you could pump up the ASA quite a bit more, but You had to use a special developing process to do it. It was supposed to be grainy as heck at that speed, but sometimes the extra grain made the photo look........ special.

Man, you bring back memories.

Today's my birthday (81). At our age we're just getting out of all but memories, eh?

I just remembered this...one of my shots was of a civilian who approached a fireman and remarked that "fire is loud." The fireman answered that, "That's all the voices of the spirits of that house."

Very cool John. Brings back memories of fun times. A lot of work tho. The young kids to day don't have a clue.

Hello. I will try to send you the file of that controlled fire. Here, at least, is the site for you. Enjoy.
