try f-7 and go smaller if need be. 4 pretty big for how bright it is. manual focus. good luck.
ISO 100, 1/125, f/16, manual focus and on a tripod
Your meter {in auto} is probably averaging the whole image, or a good portion, thereby over exposing the moon.

Yup, this is the starting point then adjust shutter speed as required for present circumstances, at least that has been my experience.

Thanks guys Much appreciated
Mine didn't turn out like yours Dirtpusher but I sure learned a lot

F16 for shooting the moon? The moon is moving across the sky quite fast. I would recommend a nearly wide open aperture and freeze the moon's motion with a faster shutter speed. So thinking along those lines, try ISO 400 - 800, nearly wide open aperture, manual mode, and then just adjust the shutter speed until you get the desired brightness on the moon. The best contrast and detail will come from the shots where the moon is not overexposed.
Yes, the moon is full lit by the sun, so a ballpark exposure would be as he stated above. Usually there is a bit of atmospheric haze or cloud that will require more exposure than that "sunny f16 rule" however. That is where opening up and raising the ISO comes into play.

Here's one I got Christmas eve....with the Sigma 150-500.
1/200 at F10 iso200
I did manual, ISO 200, f10, shutter 1/250. Manual focus. Spot metering. It came out beautiful.
I get acceptable moon shots using: manual mode, f-16, 1/250th and adjust the ISO if needed. On really clear nights and full moon, sometimes I have to increase the speed to get details. Can hand-hold for the shot. Use longest lens you have.
canon EF 75-300 mm lens. iso 100, f4.5, shutter speed 125

Good place to start, in manual mode of course. However, I use single point autofocus. My eyes ain't what they used to be.
Christmas Moon Shots! Why didn't I think of that! That would make for a Christmas card that would really be the talk of the town! Maybe next year!:)
