Canon 5d mark IIi or 7d mark II? What is your recommendation?
Keep in mind that there is a new kid in town as well, by the name of 5Ds!!
It has the same effective focus system, possibly better, but just at a slower frame rate. Depending on your ultimate goals, don't rule out the 5Ds!!
There's still time to get one...., it's still Christmas!!!!! ;-)

For what type of photography?
The 5DIII is FF, better in low light, very good IQ, wider view for close spaces or landscapes with any given lens
The 7DII is APS-C, better AF, pretty good in low light, pretty good IQ doesn't go as wide with a given lens but more reach at telephoto with a given lens. Much faster frame rate for action.
I own the 6D and 7DII they are both good at what they do. A lot of overlap but also many things one is better at than the other.
If the op is not specific about the intended use, it's pretty much an unloaded question. We're just listening to ourselves talk!! ;-)

When has this not been the case? Sorry! Merry Christmas!

Both are great cameras. What is your intended use? The 7D2 with an APS-C sensor and 10 frames per second is geared more to sports and action. As a crop sensor camera it can use lens designed for crop or FF. The 5DIII as a full frame body will only take EF mount lenses. It has better low light performance but takes far fewer frames per second. The 7D2 uses Dual pixel technology. AF in Liveview is very fast. The older 5DIII does not have that capability. The 7D2 has some focus options not available on the 5DIII. The 5DIII is a little bigger and heavier, but the control layout is almost identical to the 7D2. Choosing one over the other really depends on what you shoot, what lenses you have, and your budget. The 5D3 body only is around $2500. The 7D2 body only is around $1400.

Buy both! Use them for different things! Then all your bases are covered. In the event that you can't afford both you need to tell us what type of shooting you plan to do in order to get some useful answers.
Lol...how many hundreds of these do we see a year?
OP: Should I buy X camera or Y camera? I want to move up.
UHH Chorus: X! or Y! (or any number of other wallet draining scenarios)
The UHH is singlehandedly keeping Canon and Nikon's digital camera divisions alive :)

And, at Christmas time it appears to be providing entertainment for grumpy old men.
Thank you all for your replies. I have been playing with photography and would like to do some more serious work. I have been using a Canon T3i with the kit lens and a 65mm ef lens. I posted the question because I really didn't understand why the 5D was $1,000 higher than the 7D.
I like to do candid portraits, landscapes, and architectural photography. I don't do sports. I plan to upgrade to a Canon 24-70 mm 2.8 lens.
Thank you! These are excellent resources.
