i just like the composition and balance of color masses.
An artist might crop it but i like it the way it is, room to look around.

Its the season of goodwill so I will try young St3v3.
Looks like a guy came upon a scene which blew his mind so he grabbed a camera with a puny bit of simplistic kit inside called a sensor and tried his best to capture the vision his eyes had sent to his brain?
Aint ever gonna happen fella. No way not ever!
There are many good photo opportunities within this frame but our man opted for everything and the kitchen sink.
Technically the sky is blown and I cannot find anything thats sharp on download? Focus is very soft. Is this a point and shoot camera snap? Colours look a tad unreal as in oversaturated.
This looks like a real cool spot for a snapper my man but needs a bit more thought as to what to include and what to leave out to get best impact. Higher shutter speed or tripod and some detail or at least colour in the sky. A light reading needs taking from the sky as its the brightest area by far.
Makes one wonder if I am looking at the same snap as those who commented before me but at 100% after download its incredibly soft all over the frame.

Was sitting here trying to understand why your comment and mine differed so much; finally think i understand.
You seem to be judging how well the photographer captured the scene. Is it properly framed, focused and exposed.
I'm interested in what he saw, not what he did so the first thing i do to a downloaded image is remove anything (saturation, contrast, etc...) that i feel the photographer contributed and try to judge only the image.

Its true, he butchered the capture but the important thing is, he saw and recorded the possibility.

This classic view of the falls is always wonderful and when you've got all that cloud action and some fall color, even moreso.

If it were mine (which it isn't, wish it was!) I'd dial back the reds/oranges which seem to overburden the lower half of the image, and seek some detail in the original's sky to counter the blank whiteness and get a better balance. I bet the sky detail is there for retrieval.

I can see the softness Billy's referencing, and not sure whether it is at the point of capture or a result of processing, but something has chewed up a bit of detail.

What a joy to be in Yosemite in weather like that, while the valley's trees are in fall color!

"Winter is Coming". Works for me- the colorless sky and mist makes me feel cold and the fall foliage completes the message. ;)

Below is the area that's of most interest to me.

I didn't care for the large foreground trees being cut off at the tops, and the expanse of white sky. The crop feels more intimate.

With the crop I feel more a part of the scene, especially with the curve of shoreline on the right and the trees on each side of river that lean into the frame and draw me further into the scene. This is a beautiful depiction of changing seasons, Steve.

I wouldn't have noticed lack of sharpness, probably from my personal experiences of shooting distant landscapes :)

But there are so many small details in this image, I don't know if super-sharp would have more impact or just make it look too busy. Soft would be my choice.

Nice crop Linda. I confess to being in the kitchen sink school of composition, so I seldom find these things. I'd have framed up just like St3v3M did. In fact, I have quite a few shots taken from this spot and they're all framed up kitchen sink style. None of mine have the great features in this one though, all were summer shots with very plain skies.

Being of the kitchen-sink school as well, I guess it's easier to do the editing if one hasn't visited the location :)

After looking at this in download and reading the stack of comments, I've come to this conclusion; I like the picture as taken. It's a postcard sort of shot, and the grey sky doesn't bother me as I see the fog drifting down over the mountain top. Personally I would not crop this one as I like it the way it is. Again we come down to taste in digital captures. I also liked the softer focus on this as it lends to the atmosphere IMHO.

Thank you! The composition was the best the site had to offer, and the colors feel a bit overdone, but I can work on that. Always learning! S-
