of course you can use it. The printer doesn't know what brand the paper is. It may or may not make as good prints than some other paper but you most vertainly can use it. I have used Staples paper in my canon printer. Works quite well.

Thanks.
Do you need/use an ICC file for printing?

I don't know Canon printers or use HP paper, but use CC profiles... you may find what you need below.

Yes, you can use HP paper and many others with no problem. The bad news is, Canon will not supply icc profiles for non Canon paper which is pretty much the same for all printer manufacturers. You can go to the HP site and download the icc profile for that paper and it will get you close. (maybe) If you choose a paper manufacturer such as Breathing Color, that does not make printers you stand a much better chance of getting an icc profile from their site for both paper and printer which will get you even closer and in most cases very good results. The best solution all around is to create your own icc profile for each paper type and make which will save you muchos $$ in the long run and make your prints spot on. Of course that entails a cash layout of around $500. That decision is usually based on print volume. If you do a lot of printing then yes, go for it. If not settle for the generic profiles.

Remember that an icc profile is based on printer AND paper. If you can only get a profile based on paper, your case, then you will need to tweak your settings using trial and error but once you get it right you will seldom need to reprint.

I tried HP paper once (4 x 6in) and was not happy with the results. I use the same Pro 100 printer, and the prints came out sticky. I returned the remainder to the store and showed them the 2 prints I made and they refunded my money. Maybe you will have better results.

Long time ago I bought my first Canon printer and trying to save money bought cheapest HP photo paper. Result was very bad. I called to Canon and asked them how can I solve my problem. They recommended me using only Canon paper . I followed their advice and do not have any problem.

I fell into the same situation, MMC. However, I have found there are other brand paper that also work well. I mostly use Canon, but Kodak and Canson are also very nice products. I NEVER use aftermarket ink.

I never had any luck using ICC profiles. Actually, I just let the printer do all the profiling on its own and it does quite well. If I monkey with the profiling by letting Photoshop handle color management or the printer use ICC profiles, I get colors way out of whack.

I am probably doing something wrong, but I've spent hours reading and experimenting with ICC profiles. I've even profiled paper by myself with my Colormunki calibration gizmo. Still turned out crappy.

You must turn off profiling in the printer and let only the software handle the profile. They both can't do the profiling unless you want to end up with out of whack prints.

I know. I've tried that. But I could be doing it wrong. I have the Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II

I can't help with that particular printer but from others I have found that some driver screens make it very hard to find where to turn off the profiling. Try a Google search for "turn off icc profile for pixma pro 9000 mk 11"

I did a search and am stealing one of the responses shown below. Hope this helps.

Quote:
I have a 9500 but I'm guessing that the software is similar. In the Canon printer menu:
-tab for Main
-radio button for color/intensity, set it to manual
-select button named set.
-choose tab matching
-choose color correction none

Unfortunately I haven't found out how to make this default so may have to do it each time you print.
