Break in the Weather (comparison)

From yesterday's snow storm, here is an image of a break in the weather before the next round of storms mosey on in. Comparison of color and B/W. No HDR used. Straight ACR and PSCC with some Nik filters on the color image and Nik BW conversion on the B/W image.

My self critique is that on the BW image you can't really tell much that it has snowed in the foreground.

Comments are welcome.

For me, the color is about a clearing storm because of the blue sky and bit of sunlit landscape. A really lovely mood of gorgeous wilderness, with the subject being the entire frame.

Because of the very dark sky and clouds, the b&w feels more like a menacing storm is forming. The scary clouds alone are the subject (and story) for me here. It doesn't really matter if the foreground appears to be grasses or snow because they are not important to my interpretation of what's going on.

Nice image with great clouds. If you want to make the snow more noticeable in the monochrome, re-develop the base image with the blues desaturated a good bit, then convert. (I like the color version better with the blues tamed a bit, too) The whites of the snow will really pop with this B&W conversion. I tried it, and it came out nicely. You'd then have to tangle with the tonalities in the clouds again to make them come out right but you'd find that pretty easy.

Thank you for your insight. Looks like this image has many possibilities and is a work in progress.

You were right on your feeling of the menacing clouds. It wasn't but a half hour later and the mountains was covered in clouds and it began to snow again.

I think the colour version has much more feel - despite my love of b&w. I can feel the cold in those blues, and the sky says 'more to come'.

I prefer the B & W. The color has many details, especially in the foreground, that seem detract from the impact of the sky. Beautifully done in B & W!
