Aftermarket ink cartridges

I've always used Canon ink cartridges for printing on my Pro-100, but am getting tired of the high cost. Bought a set of aftermarket cartridges for $40, but now am wondering if there is an 'approved' procedure to properly test these cartridges for color accuracy?

If I simply take out the OEM cartridges and replace with the aftermarket, there will be some mixing of inks for a period of time. I haven't read anywhere if there is a 'proper' method to eliminate left over OEM ink before putting the new AM cartridges in. I suppose you could do a couple deep cleanings, but will the printer actually do that with no cartridges installed.

Be interested to know what you printer geeks do under these circumstances.

I own a Canon Pro-100 printer (eight cartridges). I am lucky enough to live within a few miles of the LD Products warehouse (http://www.ldproducts.com ) and their over-the-counter store. I have literally driven to their store, between 13x19-inch prints, when I ran low on one cartridge color.

I see absolutely no difference in printed colors, comparing new Canon cartridges to re-filled LD cartridges, EXCEPT FOR THE COST! On 12/10, during an advertised special, I paid $4.79/each for eleven cartridges for my Pro-100 printer.

Hmmm, good info, but no answer to my question...😳

I do NO printhead cleaning nor ink purging, before installing re-filled ink cartridges.
I have not read any suggestion to do either procedure.

I DO suggest using highest quality re-filled ink cartridges available. Like any product, there will be a diversity of acceptable quality. This is where other Hogger's experiences with tried re-filled cartridges, are valuable.

Don't know what brand you got.
I use Precision Colors and they say not to mix the yellows because of the formula that the Canon Cartridges use. Leads to clogging from the mix. To prime/purge the machine needs ink to push through the feed lines.

Nikonian72 - I checked the LD website, looks like they claim to use Canon ink to refill the cartridges or get it from the people who supply/make Canon. Have you asked them about that? I would think it is the only way they could say it doesn't kill the warranty. But I don't see how Canon would allow that, they make too much off ink.

I did discuss this with the LD counter rep, who said that Canon cannot void the printer warranty unless it can be proven that any printer failure is directly related to a re-fill cartridge. Supposedly, a court precedent has already been established.

Related: my old HP printer (after warranty period) would post a screen informing me that I was loading an un-authorized re-fill cartridge, but my Canon Pro-100 posts no similar warning when I use LD cartridges.

I don't recall getting any warnings about ink, but my HP printers would always say something about an HP cartridge has been installed when I changed ink.

Precision Colors doesn't say anything about it that I remember. But they do stress that their ink is regularly reformulated for top performance. And they notify you if an update in formula is available. They especially stress care with Yellow as the Canon formula does not play nice with other formulas. They don't even recommend re-use of Canon yellow cartridges unless they are flushed and cleaned. I got around any problem there by just ordering the refill kit with 8 new cartridges.

A good example of why they can't void the warranty if you use after market replacement parts would be all of the things you replace on your automobile that aren't factory parts. Same thing with printers.

The point was that I did not want to 'mix' OEM and after market inks so I could see if there was any noticeable difference between the two. Here's what I ended up doing:
I removed the OEM tanks, installed the after market cartridges, did two deep cleanings and then made five 8.5X11 prints in a row of the same image. All images looked good and could not tell the difference between the original print from the OEMs and the new ones. No notice by the printer of anything different.

The only indication I've seen of something different is that my printer dialogue is different for some reason and changes made in 'soft proofing' do not show as directly on the prints as before. Not at all sure why for both the above, but the prints still look good.
