Hi group,

I recently landed a large photography project and decided to use it as the impetus in getting my Nikon tethered to complete the work (a couple hundred macro photos). Tethering the camera through Lightroom CC works fine but as soon as I plug the USB cable into the camera/computer I lose "live view" which I use a lot in my macro photography. I've been through the manual and google for the last couple of days and don't find a solution to my no-live-view-while-tethered problem. Any ideas or do I have to get an HDMI cable and connect a remote monitor? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Take care & ...

Al, it might help to know what software you are using for the tethering interface. I use DigiCam Control off and on for my D5200. One thing I have found is that if I use a very long USB cable extender (say 25' or so) then the interface stops working correctly.

I've had tethering issues with my D-750 as well. With my Nikon connected to an Acer laptop or Canon Selphy CP 910, the shutter wouldn't trip. Disconcerting when taking 50+ photos of kids with Santa and then printing them out. Maybe we both need to contact Nikon for help. Best wishes in your quest.

Hi bpar1,

I've found the distance from the camera to the computer makes a difference IF you use multiple USB cables to span that distance. A single, longer (12') USB extension cable plugged into the Nikon cable seems to work fine but if I use several shorter cables the resistance in the plugs seem to cause problems. Anyway I found the below cable on eBay and I'm ordering it with hopes it will help. Regarding the ability to use the live view: I have not found a solution other than plugging an external monitor into the camera with a HDMI cable. Take care & ...

As i am getting ready to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro i no longer have Lightroom loaded on it, but when I tether my D7100 to my iMac the live view is in Lightroom and not on the camera. I think this is the way it works when using Lightroom. I am not home right now to check my statements validity, but I know that using the Nikon WMU app on my tablet does the same thing. Live view is disabled and the tablet is the LCD screen.

The cable you link to was included with my D7100 as the cable to download from the camera. I use a different tethered remote application loaded on my laptop to control the focusing on my D7100. The cable is the same. My laptop replaces liveview in this application. As far as I've been able to determine live view is always disabled in these scenarios. Even if I specify that I am saving to the card in the camera I still have to disconnect the tethering cable in order to preview via Live View. I believe you need an HDMI (for my D7100 it's actually an HDMI-mini) connection on the camera end with whatever connection is used for your monitor (USB?) on the other end

Hi Al, I'm using a single 24" cable to connect to the laptop. A bit longer one to connect to the printer. In either case, the shutter won't take the photo. I'm going to try the Android phone again using a different app. I can use the Nikon app to take the photo but transferring to the printer gets a bit testy. Some how I feel like the Sorcerers Apprentice trying to get this to work.

first, I have D200,D700 and D800. All work

I have a 10' USB rated for that length

I use ControlMyNikon, Works all the time. I have found when the battery is low on the cameras the USB interface does not even though the camera seems to be functioning fine. Also, for your benefit, ControlMyNikon has Photo Stacking capabilities. when I brought mine it was like $49. Best $49 I spent. Just used it Wed when I was shooting Christmas Family portraits. Heard the woman was DEMANDING. Figured it would be good to show her full size right out of the camera. I was not wrong.

Are you using "Live View" on the back of the camera or on the tethering? I use Camera Control Pro from Nikon, on all of my Nikon cameras for tethered shots (I also use Lightroom but like Camera control pro better) and I get the "Live View" on the computer screen and do not get any preview on the camera. All control of the camera is done from the computer. I have a "tethering tripod" which has a small table attached to the roll around tripod to put the laptop I am using for tethering on. It works great.

Just make sure you enable the TRIM controller if you're using El Capitan. This is not a Sandforce SSD so enabling TRIM in the OS is somewhat critical:

To do that launch the terminal and enter the following command:
sudo trimforce enable

select the return key, enter your password and you'll be prompted to confirm the enabler. The system will need to be rebooted to fully enable the TRIM controller.

Apple finally officially enabled the Trimforce controller for El Capitan which is quite helpful and means you don't have to you use a third party enabler.

All of the EVO drives allow for/support TRIM control (you can read Samsung's white papers on this issue).
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/whitepaper/whitepaper04.html/
Beginning with El Capitan Apple is allowing support for the resident Linux trim controller with a tongue in cheek disclaimer which one can ignore because folks have been using third party controllers for OS X for many years.

Sandforce SSD's BTW don't need separate TRIM control and that's another option for anyone purchasing an SSD, i.e., just purchase a Sandforce enabled SSD and the TRIM control is resident to the drive itself.

That USB cable USB 2.0 to mini-b-8pin is the same cable that was included with my D7100 and is used to download from the camera to a computer.
(I have a different problem, but not gonna hijack) ;-)

My D7100 takes a USB 3.0 which is the same as my D800. It is a flat blade plug for the camera side. Is yours like that? I did not think it was a 2.0.

I use Control My Nikon. It's under 50 dollars. Zerene Stacker for my stacking program. These samples are recent close-ups and not macro, but you can see the results. Works fine for me.
