Nice pics of portions of the gallery, KD! I have one question for you. When I visited the Hermitage in May 1990, I remember a number (or was it all?) of paintings placed behind somewhat thick acrylic(?) glass. Of those you saw, were they still being "protected" in this way? It significantly detracted from appreciating them!

did not see that -- Either missed it or they made changes -- I bet back in 1990 they gave you a much better / warmer welcome then they gave us -- Really Beautiful City with lots of don't ever come back here again Russians

If you don't mind elaborating, what examples can you provide of this attitude you state was present? Was it directed at you, you and others, or other visitors? Was this attitude dependent on the visitor's nationality, language used, inability to speak Russian, other?

Thanks.

Being flipped off & yelled at -- not once but on a consistent regular basis -- Since we were there on what they call a "group visa" we were real real easy to spot -- always in groups either getting on or off the darn tourist buses -- Must admit was not the older Russians but just about always the younger 20's to mid 30's both male & female --- Then there were the Angry Olga's those grim faced government lady inspectors that checked us & our passports out each day as we trooped off our ship & lined up to get on our buses --- Like I said a Beautiful City

I've been there three times. The first was in 1976. The contrast between the maintained splendor of the palace and the depressing deterioration of everything else was shocking. The next time was 1992. Things economic were looking up and much of the deterioration in the center of town had improved.
The last time was in 2006. We tried to get in but were faced with a long line of tourists waiting at the entrance. We walked around to a side door and knocked. When the door was opened we asked innocently if this is where the entrance was. We were told "OK, pay me the entry fee and you can come in." We did, were given tickets, and got in. A little corruption goes a long way...

Well as you can see from one of many cranes throughout the city they are still fixing the place up -- At the time of our visit those petrodollars were worth a lot more then they are now.

Thank you for sending these. Unfortunately on our return from the cruise we took a few years back, someone in Copenhagen stole my husband's backpack and my 14 rolls of film were in it. I didn't have any of the pictures I took at Peterhof, Catherine Palace or the Hermitage. :( What a beautiful place Hermitage was!!! Your photos show it being empty of people but our time there had crowds. Anyway, thanks again...I enjoyed seeing them. Please send more if you have them!

On our Moscow to St. Petersburg cruise 10 years ago, any fluid in bottles (we hid water in a pocket) were not allowed in museums because sometime previous a tourist threw acid on a painting. There was no animosity to our group of Americans. How quickly politics change!

Wonderful images... Thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear about the rudeness of the locals, however.
