Nikon TC-E14II vs. TC-E14III

MakuaMan Loc: Waianae, Hi.

I saw on DP Review that the TC-E14II is a (FX) Tele-converter and the TC-E14III is a (DX). Does anyone know if the II is compatible with the 85mm3.5 micro-nikor.

I saw a color compatibility chart here once and know that my 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 is usable with all but can auto focus only on the 1.4 but am wondering if the 85mm will also.

Appreciate any information, Mahalo

All the Nikon TC's are full frame (FX). EDIT: ...but will work on DX bodies.

Mahalo OddJobber,

I thought so but if you look on DP Review you'll see what I mean. Must be a typo.

Forgot to add, here's the compatibility chart from Nikon.

And no, the TC's will not mount to your 85mm. Sorry.

I was considering it but will now look only for used 105mm's.

You're right, that's definitely a typo. Go to B&H photo and look at the specs. It's compatible with both FX and DX.

Mahalo again OddJobber,

I'm not sure I would use it that much with a micro so spending $500.00 more for the 105mm may not really be worth it.
I pinned that chart to my start page so I won't have to ask again.

DP Review is no more than a collection of bloggers, the quality of the info posted there varies widely with whoever posts it. As already said Nikons TC's, as well as all other TC's, are always full frame in sizing. No one makes a dedicated APS-C sized TC.
As for your 85mm Micro lens, you do NOT want a TC on it anyway, what you want for that would be an extension tube set. Much cheaper too.

The Nikon TC-14E III is essentially the same thing as the original TC-14E and TC-14E II, just with different cosmetics. This III adds a rubber ring at the back, but removes the mechanical linkage needed to use this with lenses with an aperture ring present in the first two versions.
