I'm looking at the Nikon18-200-3.5... I know it's not the top of the line lens, but that's all I can afford...all comments would be appreciated...my son is a band director, I shoot band competition, in door concerts, n my grand sons.

So what camera are you going to put it on?

That's not a fast lens and not intended to be used without a flash or external lighting in a low light situation. As a result you may have trouble shooting indoor band competitions with it. You will need to keep the shutter speed up and will need a camera capable of low noise at high ISO. What camera body are you using?
Since it is a dx lens, Grand is probably using a dx camera. That being said, the best Grand could have is a D7200. That makes the combination look a possible, but not my first choice. However No matter what camera I have, if that's what I have then that's what I would use and do the best I can. I saw a af 50mm d today selling for $70. I would try that along with your 18-200 until the finances improve. Good Luck Leon
Great for grand kids as you can zoom in and get great candid shots. Works well for landscapes at 18mm and it would capture the whole band as well. For the money it's a winner.

Don't give up on that lens so quickly, it is a very good DX lens. Ken Rockwell loves that lens and considers it the best Nikon DX lens available. I just picked the vrii version of that lens up and I love it. It out performs my Tamron 18-270 mm in sharpness so it stays on my D7100 body as my all around lens. Later, you can add a 35mm 1.8 prime lens for under $200 dollars for low light situations. Until you are ready to move up to a full frame, the 18-200 mm is a great lens for the body you currently have.

Whatever you get, it doesn't have to be new. Used and refurb can save enough to let you get a better lens.

I had a 18-200 when I used a D200. The lens was very flexible since it had a wide zoom range. It wasn't the sharpest lens available, but it was reasonable, particularly since you didn't have to switch lenses. The biggest limitation was the D200, which didn't perform well at higher ISO (above 800). Newer cameras don't have that problem.

I use it all the time on my D7100 (and on the D7000 that preceded it. Better on the D7100 for indoors because of the higher ISOs. I have several Nikon lenses, but the 18-200 is on the camera most of the time.
That may modify my positive response. The D3100 is an older sensor and not as good at high ISO as a D7100 or 7200. On the other hand, I don't think there is a zoom that would be better without mortgaging your house. You could try an 85mm 1.8 for under $500 from Adorama or for $1500 you could shoot for the 1.4 which is a great lens, but beyond your needs.

I have the II version of this lens, it is sharp, it is my vacation lens because of the light weight. Ebay has a ton at reasonably priced choices.

That lens lives on my D90, it is a very good general purpose lens. I strongly suggest a flash for indoors, I use an SB 600 with excellent results.
